Just to save anyone wondering - this is the only store in the country at this price since they operate as an outlet inside HOF.

Called local Evans and they have medium size in stock. They built it and fitted accessories. Saved the delivery costs and quick pick up too. Hope it helps someone, worth calling local Evans.

Can anyone give me some advice on the sizing as I’ve never bought a bicycle before. Would the large size be suitable for a 6’4 tall person or would it be too small?

The 4.2 KG extra weight of this will be a slog up hills.

Check the Evans thread for actual decent deals. £379 gets you a great light bike. The only positive here was hydraulic brakes .

Ebay jobs better than this one can be had for less than £100 if you research well. (edited)

Evans and HOF are both owned by Mike Ashley, and they share stock

nope spend the 250 on a much better second hand bike. This is heavy and none of the components are above average. Dont mix modern GT's up with the 90's ones. they are not even in the same league.

Love my RTS-3 in polished ally. I think it was originally £3500+ (I may be wrong there so I don't mind positive correction).
I've modded mine over the years but kept the (good condition) original components so it can allways be returned to factory standard.

Sensible price n spec for a budget bike. RRP is a joke.
Shame it's from the UK's worst retailer.
If you've got a branch of Evans Cycles (who are also owned by Mike Ashley and will offer exactly the same lack of service once they've got your money and handed the bike over) get it from them to save the £20 delivery charge and get it built. But don't take it back to them for servicing - learn to do it yourself or find a reputable local bike shop. (edited)

Received mine today in silver and blue, looks great and seems pretty solid.

    Word of caution though :-

Mine came boxed and unbuilt but easy to assemble - Everything went great until i tested out the gears on the road.

Unfortunately the highs and lows stop on the rears derailleur weren't correctly set so i shifted up to 1st gear and the chain came off into the spokes and jammed up - I guess it's my own fault for not checking this.

So before riding make sure you check on youtube how to adjust these stops or go to a shop and get done professionally as it's a nightmare to adjust without a workshop stand. (edited)

you need to set the limit screws of the derailleur, these set hard limits to how far the chain can go when you shift at either end of the cassette and wont be set out of the box. There are many good youtube videos on all bike maintenance but i'd recomment GCN for no nonsense videos. I wont link incase it's an issue but should be easy to find

    15.6kg so yes, very heavy.

Might as well buy the, also heavy, GT Dakar for £200 via ebay.

Edit - forget that, it is ultra heavy steel. (edited)

Would anyone say this is a good bike for an ebike conversion?
    scbk's avatar
    scbk
Not the best, but it's a cheap bike.
Frame isn't a good shape if you want a big battery, and tuck away the controller and all the cables.
Don't think GT are a good brand anymore?

My first ebike conversion was on a basic £200 bike, it's done nearly 5,000 miles.

The latest was on a Giant Escape 2 City. Fantastic bike, £700, and another £800 again to convert, 1,300 miles on that and counting.

    Both are rear wheel motors

Is the weight of a bike really important ? No, unless you intend to use the bike competitively or to race against timers etc.

The weight of a bike can actually help you get fitter the heavier it is, which lets face it most people use a bike for these benefits.

Weight is just used as a marketing tool to get people to buy more expensive options.

Obviously i'm referring to everyday cycling and not semi pro / pro cycling where speed IS important. (edited)

    Intelligent comment IMHO

    True story:

An obese lad asked assistant; I like this red bike but how heavy is it?

    Assistant replied: 15kg

Lad said: Ermm, nahhh that's too heavy, I will be riding up hill sometimes...do you have anything similar for same price but lighter; say around 12 or 13kg?

    Go figure :/ (edited)

GT bikes have been made in Asia for a very long time even as they changed ownership.

The original £550 price seems ridiculous to me. It looks like a £350-400 bike at best and £250 is great value but a basic tourney/altus drivetrain and mechanical disc brakes are a bit ridiculous on a £550 bike.

Apart from my mistakes setting up the limits of the derailleur i absolutely love this bike and would definitely recommend as entry level, even though i'm still working on the gears tweaking to get rid off any rattles etc i can see the gear shifts are pretty nice and the brakes are a million times better than my basic block pads of my previous bike and the Silver and Blue looks superb and not over the top with nice matching seat and decent hand grips.

Ride is nice and comfortable off road with the suspension and big tyres smoothing everything out.

It makes me feel like a kid again as it feels quite big like a 'Raleigh Bomber' from back in the 80's.

Honestly there is nothing i don't like about this bike at the price and i'm a cynical, miserable so and so and angry at God for blowing down my fences in the latest storms ....Grrrrr !

...But seriously if you can get this bike at £250-£300 delivered i believe you have a bargain.

But this is just my opinion. (edited)

How does this compare to say the Carrera Vengeance?
    JamesRGo's avatar
    JamesRGo
The GT is a 29" wheel for most sizes making it closer to the Carrera Hellcat (Vengeance is 27.5 across the sizes). GT has a lower spec gear derailleur but the rest is similar. For the £141 price difference I would take the GT and work on the assumption I could always upgrade the gears later if needed..

Don’t you just love the £550 RRP it’s been reduced from lol . It’s a £300 heavy bike . It’s a good price so hot from me .
    Also £550 ? With brakes from the 90s .

Disc brakes are a nuisance to maintain, especially for a casual cyclist. My Cube MTB has Shimano XT groupset and I'm fed up trying to stop the front one rubbing (fed up fixing it).

I actually enjoyed a Diamond Back from the 90s better without suspension etc.

Great spec for the price with brander components - Acera drivetrain, Suntour XCM fork, hydraulic disc brakes - don't usually get all this at this price. Yes it's on the heavy side but it's a mountain bike - that extra 1-2kg (max!) vs a bike double the price is probably not worth the extra cost for most people. Heat added.
    J1135's avatar
    J1135
Yep fully agree seems a lot better than the usual tat aroudn this price point

Regarding weigh, My MTB list price was 1400ish when it was released and that's around 13kg (FS) so I wouldn't say 14Kg was massively heavy as some users are suggesting.

Can you get sub 10Kg bikes, why yes, I have one that's 9.6Kg but and there's a few buts...

It's a CX - therefore has no weighty suspension
    It's carbon Fibre
Was about 1800 iirc (in 2017)

Thanks for the reply - I knew about the limit screws on the derailleur, unfortunately i didn't think they would be so poorly set out of the box which i soon learnt.

I'm up and running for now with a bit of damage to the hanger, but just looked on Amazon and could get a replacement Tourney for £13 if it cause any issues.

    Cheers (edited)
