The 480, and worse the 580, overclocked and overvolted the chip to get a little better performance at the cost of power draw, fan noise, and temps. Of course, the 470/570 have maybe 15% lower performance, but pull a load less power and are still pretty good at 1080p, especially since they have the same amount of VRAM as brand new Nvidia cards selling for well above 5 hundred quid.
Point of failure? Obviously the fans, including noisy bearings- but the fan assembly can be replaced at minimum cost.
Does 'mining' 'burn out' cards? No! Mining actually required running the chips in a power optimal way, to give max performance per Watt. Overclocking and overvolting was a nono for miners who had any tech knowledge.
What about general failure across hours used? There is always a 'bathtub' (google it) issue with any manufactured device used under stress. Modern electronics tends to be very good in this regard, tho- especially at the low voltages they run at. Back in the day, the common failure mode was in the power regulation circuit- especially the caps or the diodes. Modern PSU circuits have largely eliminated these issues- VRM or CAP failure is most unlikely. Does the GPU or memory chips 'wear out'- no. I've never seen this form of failure. Integrated circuits are insanely robust.
The real issue is cost vs risk for any second hand goods. At 50 quid these cards are a no brainer against anything Nvidia, which is why you see so much pro-Nvidia FUD in these comments. Personally I think 470 performance levels have had their day for any gamer wanting to play new games, and that the cards based on the 6600M (mobile variant at about twice the performance) are worth the extra.

Have you seen the mobile 11th gen i7s and i9s that come fixed onto a desktop motherboard? I'm out of touch with newer Intel stuff as well but they look pretty good.
With the code AN5 and a few "coins" I had the price was down to about £47.
My R9 200 GPU is causing some random errors, so it's worth a shot as a replacement. I'm just a casual gamer, so this should be more than enough.
Board was very clean and relatively packaged in bubble wrap sleeve, then foam box padding then cardboard then heat-shrink outer.
No cables, no manual and no electrostatic bag but none of those were expected.
Installed very quickly and easily, picked up by Windows 11 straight away and AMD Adrenaline drivers installed first time. No issues so far.
System benchmarks:
before - Nvidia GTX 660-Ti 2Gb : userbenchmark.com/Use…355 29.8 fps
after - AMD Radeon RX 580 8Gb: userbenchmark.com/Use…748 58.9 fps
Nearly doubled my benchmark framerate.
Not a modern rocketship but a good upgrade for my system for less than £50.
Card was branded as a Lexander and on the back of the board it appears the rear of the gpu chip has 470 printed on it.
Had a few issues as my monitor wouldn’t work via HDMI but both DVI and DP work (The monitor is a decade old 27 inch Korean 1440p which were all the rage at the time and based on the ones we still have at work, can be quite touchy about inputs).
Using the AMD driver detect software installed drivers only, as I didn’t want any adrenaline bloat on my machine. Audio works perfectly fine over DP which is good as there is no option to change PCI gen in my motherboards bios.
Haven’t played any games on it, but ran the benchmark that has been on the last few posts. As its straight out the box I’m happy with the score of 2138 don’t know what influence my CPU has on this. Very surprised how quiet it was under full load, fans don’t seem to kick in till mid 40s temperatures. The last GPU I purchased was a 4670 in 2009 and it sounded like a vacuum cleaner whilst playing COD MW2
Walked past my local CEX at lunchtime and they had a RX 580 in the window with a lesser looking cooler for £110 so happy with my £50 card.
Thanks Glitchface.

Would this card be compatible with this PC? Thinking of buying both...

It's basically an RX570, running at RX580 clocks. So performance is halfway between the two. (edited)
I have got RX470 with GPU 1210Mhz and RAM 1650Mhz, that card gets at the beginning of Unigine Heaven around 34-35FPS for the first 10-15s.
Now that "RX 580" that has got GPU 1280Mhz and RAM 1750Mhz, gets 32-33FPS in the same scene. I double checked all specs in HWInfo, and they seem to be correct, the card gets to full speed, yet it is a bit slower than RX470 that has got lower Mhz...
I wonder if that card has got some modified bios for mining with different timings, that lowered 3D performance? I know that miners modify timings specifically for mining. (edited)
I had really bad crackling noises when connected to speakers and HDMI devices, and after asking around trying lots of attempts, a user on another forum suggested to change the PCI gen speed to gen2 instead of gen3, as it turns our that in mining they change it back to gen2 for stability. And voila' - after changing the PCI to gen2 in the BIOS, it is now running just fine, and since apparently there isn't much difference between gen2 and gen3 with this card, I didn't notice any slowdown or drop in fps, in fact I got a higher score in Furmark.
I contacted the seller which didn't give any real solutions to the issues, and refunded me 20% of the price.
I guess I was unlucky with the one I received. (edited)
EDIT - I should re-word that: mining doesn’t wear cards out any faster than other GPU-related activities (eg gaming, folding, compute workloads). (edited)
What is a diculator? (edited)
I say issue they both work fine. But surely 87c is not good for them right? Any idea how I can possibly get the temps down a little? I did read about undervolting but I dont have a clue how to do that.
Have you adjusted your Diculators? (edited)
These cards have not been this low for a while, only the current Aliexpress promotion has brought it down a bit.
however, in a case of 'aliexpress - go big or go home' i bit on that rx6600M deal that was posted a few days ago
so fingers firmly crossed

These are ex-mining cards that have been refurbished, the seller hasn't made a secret of it and they have good reviews. There is nothing that will come close to this in performance or VRAM for the price.
Only changed it to something new, as i upgraded to a 32" TFT....
In short, my 580 ran fine at 1080p on my 27" TFT , with main game being Warzone (1st one)........
HEAT
Is this a worthwhile upgrade?
Just casual. Not hardcore gaming..
Or 1660 super for £100 (edited)
A week ago I ordered a Huawei band watch, it was showing as a "select" product with 11 days on time guarantee, and I actually received it 4 days after the order, which is amazing. (edited)
