Bought my self 2 week ago M1 Max 16Inch refurb can not resist
As new M2 Max £3700 OMG So with this in mind new M3 Max Will be Same price around £3700 and M2 Max say refurb around £3000 on apple
No way I will by paying £3000 for refurb M2 or M3
Bought with the mind can return 14 Days So was testing and deciding to keep or not

What can I say Yes it is faster then my Intel MacBook Pro 2019 16 Inch , but not for day to day task - hard to notice as Intel 2019 can do day to day task without heating up as well and good battery life around 8 Hours

The biggest Difference M1 Max compare to Intel :
1 Video works is day and Night I mean there is 4 x Times or sometimes more faster decoding encoding plus no heat at all no fan noise nothing
2 Under full load very little heat and noise from fans - where Intel heat up and then spin the fans So noise + heat to keep laptop can be issue
3 The screen The contrast, brightness and 120 Hz yes it is noticeable better But on Intel the screen good as well I would say new screen is bonus but not revolution
4 Battery Life on lights task 2 x times better on heavy load I would say maybe 3 x Times compare to Intel

Is it better M1 Max then Intel 2019 YES is it is better --- but if cash is limited and do not working with video I would say nothing wrong with Intel 16 Inch to keep for another 2 -4 Years as then you can buy M4 Max

Example 1 exported Video and M1 Max done maybe in 3 Minutes and Intel done in 12 Minutes with fans on max speed
Example 2 converted 400 Pictures and M1 Max Done in 3 Minutes Intel Done in 8 Minutes

But These work if you do 2 times a month is it matter these 10 minutes difference But your new toy will cost you money and these money need to earn so you will spend month at work for free compare to 10 Minutes for longer on Intel

The biggest problem with M1 or M2 "Apple silicon " is no more proper windows no bootcamp

So this is very noticeable where my intel mac is universal machine I can do 3D house modeling works with windows and latter I can do photo work with Mac OS

Now with M1 there is parallels "virtual OS" but it is ARM version and lot of programs do not run or do not install at all on windows ARM or if they work they work slower then Intel on windows

I will keep intel for windows 10 etc .... or give to family member as this machine can survive another 4 year or more without problem The only issue is the heat if you load but speed wise it is still fast to my works

After this moral do I keep M1 Max Yes I will keep but there was 50 / 50 at beginning to return

You say the screen isn’t much different but try watching some HDR content in YouTube. It’s massively better. Night and Day

Also worth noting that refurbished from Apple basically makes it brand new again. Even comes in new apple packaging albeit labelled refurb. Not like all these eBay sellers “refurbishing” things.

I'd honestly go with this refurb over a new £1200 M2 air if given a choice. Mostly because you get a faster ssd and 16gb ram over 8gb which does matter if you plan to use it for years (and work on it, believe me)

you also get a better display, more ports, active cooling etc.

I have this exact model and it’s excellent. I push it to its limits quite a lot and it handles anything with ease.
Even 18 months later I still get excellent battery life too.

I received my machine earlier today. besides the box stating the laptop is refurbished, and the corresponding model number, the machine look new. Battery cycle count is 2, and battery health 100%.

The only thing that is minorly off-putting is the condition of the SSD, which obviously shows it is not brand new.
    - 4.2TBR
    - 3.4TBW
    - Power Cycle ~500
    - Power On Hours ~45

However, I feel it is still in a rather healthy state.

How do you check the SSD condition if you don't mind?

Excellent laptop, worth the premium for the admiring and envious glances it attracts at coffee shops. Heat++

Sounds very expensive for a second hand laptop

    trob.
Non of the apple refurbished products sold directly from Apple are “second hand” you won’t find a mark on them, they come with a full manufacturer warranty and apple care can be added to them if you wish. This is a great price for this machine and the M2 model in real world testing isn’t much different.

I paid £1899 for the same brand new when they came out back in late 2021. I've seen 16" going for cheaper than this elsewhere so I'd hold out or have a search if you fancy getting a higher spec cheaper.

I have a 16GB 1TB M1 Air that I got for £1400 and it's been excellent, replaced my 2012 MBP with it so let's hope it lasts me as long.

To those saying it's expensive for a refurb laptop, you're right, it is expensive. But it's an utterly brilliant laptop, I got it brand new last year and it's easily better than any like-for-like Windows alternative on the market by a LONG shot. In terms of both performance and battery life. (edited)

I agree. I will never own an iPhone, but my 2012 Macbook Pro is better built, feels quicker and battery life has only recently got worse than my 2018 Dell XPS. Both cost just under £1k. (edited)

Check out Costco may be cheaper. Got the m2 1700 ish

Costco has 16/512 MBA for 1599 with 2 years warranty. I was really torn between this and that. Eventually caved in for this.

They also have M2 MBP on promotion earlier this month, but limit to executive members, which I wasn't keen on signing up for.

If you need 16GB RAM and 512GB storage with apple silicon, this is actually the cheapest option. Even the M2 Macbook Air will cost more than this. But yes, it is rather expensive. Dell XPS (XPS 13, 9315, to be specific) look super cheap compare to this. (edited)

Can you show me which dell XPS looks super cheap compared to this? You'd have to pay at least the same amount to get a 16gb ram 512gb SSD xps 15

Does this version suffer from flexgate? If so avoid.
    ken218's avatar
    ken218 Author
Machines affected by flexgate seems to be from 2016-2017, which were sold up to 2018. This is from 2021, so in short, no, I don't think these are affected.

I think it’s not a bad deal given that people on Facebook marketplace still try to sell a used MacBook Air M1 (2020) for £700+ without warranty

Not worth comparing to the outliers. The average is 400-500.

Just did a quick search and the first 4 results near me are 300, 500, 400, and 230. With only that last one being in bad condition.
