Although these types of dumbbells are cheap, they do have flaws. They use internal gearing to change the weight, usually plastic. The longevity of that could vary. They need to be placed in their base holder to be adjusted. No matter what the weight they will always be long and potentially cumbersome. For the more serious of home gym setups, invest in some Powerblocks Expandable.

worth keeping an eye on site like gumtree as lockdown homegyms are being sold off now. i was lucky enough to pick up a pair of 24kg powerblocks for £40 from a woman who just wanted all her exs gym equipment out of her garage.

This is a 10 in 1 dumbbell that adjusts up to 25KG - There is no deceit in the title.

Ask them to adjust to 2.5KG before, to save on posting.

Is there a best most cost effective /efficient way to setup for home gym instead of buying every kg or buying like these which can be cumbersome by design ?

You can do an awful lot with an adjustable dumbbells and an adjustable weight bench, it would be plenty enough kit for a lot of people

i don’t know of an alternative to free weights or adjustable weights  (edited)

how to avoid the two huge dumbbells bumping into each other when doing bench press?
    JammyBongo's avatar
I have a different set that are just as bulky. I twist my arms on the way up so my palms face each other at the top, then twist again on the way back down.

    Bowflex is the way

Too a novice, any reason whats the reason these type of dumbbells are so expensive?
    wellayeman's avatar
All dumbells are expensive, especially since Covid hit. These are aimed at people who want to save space and have options of different weights in one spot with no mess. The only alternative is to buy a bunch of weight plates and dumbell bars and make up the sizes you want each time you train, or buy some fixed weight dumbells which, when you get stronger, need to replaced by bigger and way more expensive ones.

In my opinion, this kind of thing is aimed towards people who have very limited space and want to have the option to switch up the weights quite easily. Absolutely no seasoned weight lifter would consider buying these because it's more of a starting point.
