how do EVs in general deal with prolonged periods of sitting? i.e. weekend use only? do they discharge a lot while sitting around?
    nicholas_collinson's avatar
I have a Kia e-Niro that’s been sat for 3 weeks now and it hasn’t dropped a single percent or mile on the range.

China has a serious advantage in battery production cost, which is obviously a big chunk of an EV's cost. Everyone in the industry is panicking. Particularly the Germans and the Japanese.

The UK has nuked its car industry with Brexit. In the short term this is bad news for our industry for sure, but it is likely now costs are so high in Europe Germany will struggle to compete with Chinese manufacturers if the target of 2030/2035 for all new cars to be EV. The UK never stood a chance. So many factors are playing into the hands of the Chinese.

China is going to invade the European markets in particular and obliterate everything within 15 years unless there is some sort of trade tariff on Chinese built electric vehicles. China invited in the big manufacturers who rushed into China on pretty poor business terms just to get into that massive market.

Now 30 years later they'll be destroyed in their own domestic markets since China absorbed all their technology at minimal cost, can iterate quickly with access to cheaper energy, materials and labour. Funny if it wasn't tragic.

I cant believe how much EVs have dropped in the used market. Whilst ICE car values have been rocketing, EVs having been dropping like a stone. Audi Etrons that we're bought for 70k 2 to 3 years ago are now selling, eventually, for 30k. Ipace, and Mercedes etc are all the same story. So if you are looking for an EV I'd advise at least looking on the used market first. I'm just waiting for the right one to pop up and I'll be jumping in, probably etron tbh.

Been watching some videos by a youtuber called 'Geoff Buys Cars', and he has a couple of videos about the dropping price of used EV's, and claims they often go around auctions numerous times and end up going for really low money, because beyond the initial 3 year lease, no-one wants them and the increasing chance of the expensive battery replacement costs.

For any public sector workers, you can buy this model in any colour, from any dealership and with a free type 2 cable for £30,088 via the Affinity scheme.

    I own this car

It's pretty decent. I like it and it drives well, it's cheap to run.

Looks are subjective, but that's up to the individual.

Performance is good, handling is good, stereo in trophy is good.
  6. Delboyplc's avatar
The link doesn't really give any specifications regarding the car. It states long range, how long is long range ?

Or alternatively the BYD Seagull EV for under £10k (as long as you're prepared to emigrate to the PRC)...

    DodgeySolenoid's avatar
That looks a fantastic little city run around / short journey vehicle.

Why anyone would buy this ugly car from a terrible brand is beyond me!

My neighbours ZS has been at the dealership for 2.5 months waiting for spares...and its a year old!

A Tesla Model 3 is far superior!
    Topper1900's avatar
Any idea how many Tesla's have been stuck at dealers for months? I've heard rumours insurers are writing them off with fairly minimal damage rather than waiting months for parts to arrive. Don't Tesla 3's start at £40K new anyway?

Best value EV on the market currently ♨️

Not to burst your bubble but I can't recommend much made in china that lasts?

Bit ugly imo.. Looks a bit like a Nissan Leaf. (edited)
    fishmaster's avatar
100% doesn't look like a leaf. It much more resembles a Lamborghini Urus which isn't a pretty car but isn't that ugly either.

I've got a 72 MG EV and the car software is buggy
    stapsell's avatar
Agree, its minor stuff but annoying: for me the volume for carplay hangs up, playback freezes, GPS stalls.
I think I need to have a word with the garage.
Only just discovered I can use my phone as car key to unlock / drive etc! (Thought would only be the connect model, but mine is the trophy LR).
Its not as good as key, since app takes 10s to wake up and connect, but very convenient feature
  13. rambits's avatar
Wish the EV market can become as competitive as in China, every car you can find here is salling at half price in China, Tesla, EQC, ix3, ID.... (edited)
    plunet's avatar
The models sold in China will be a bit different as they won't comply to our safety standards. Add the shipping, import tax (10%) and vat (20%) and a few other costs, and that probably explains a good part of the difference in price, but not all of it.

I have said it before but be sure new car discount actually have a physical car to sell you before you pay your deposit. I paid a deposit to them for a car with a 2-3 week delivery time,  turns out the car didn’t exist.
  15. HQW2015's avatar
The car is utterly rubbish, search for MG4 oil leaks. They keep selling it without a proper fix. The software is as buggy as a software can get.

Rejected my after it started leaking. MG customer service is non existent too. (edited)
    iainl7's avatar
Yes, first batch was dodgy. They’ve fixed it now, thank goodness, but those owners had a bad time trying to get it fixed.
  16. Bikerdanny's avatar
I’ve got a MG4 SE, apart from a few teething issues it’s been great. And surprisingly one of the best handling cars I’ve ever owned - i’ve had several hot hatches over the years too !

however if I was buying it again brand new at the moment in time then I probably wouldn’t, I would get one of the used EV bargains you can now get - 3 year old year with 30k on the clock for £12k. Yes the MG4 is superior, but that’s just too cheap to ignore.
    ariecol's avatar
Sensible idea. Which car is it, please? Thank you

Posted this on another thread - drive past an MG dealer every day on the school run - there is a field next to it in which there are hundreds of cars, mostly MG4s and ZS piling up - seems to be more and more every day. They're also doing 0% finance on these now. I'd be looking to negotiate a hefty discount if I was buying one.
    Delboyplc's avatar
Reminds me of when I used to work for a rover dealer. Fields full of cars and would cringe if anyone ordered a white car. The fields where next to a steel manufacturer and you would have pin prick rust marks all over the cars. But that's quality British car building at it's best

I have the Mustang 🐎 Mach-e..love it ..live and work in east and south Ayrshire currently don't pay a penny for charging...good times.
    iainl7's avatar
The Mach-e is lovely, but when I priced one up I ended up at almost exactly twice the cost of the MG4 I’ve ordered.

Seen a few on the road. Look nice ..the only naff bit is the oversized MG badge on the bonnet which looks pants.

    OK and ?

Do you realise how the Chinese Market is doing well in the ev world and the originally UK brands such as jaguar and land-rover are doing badly in ev terms. They need to start or go down the pan

You must do Miles with electric car to gain money where you spend at higher price buying car
If you just do 5000 miles per year it is cheaper to buy any petrol car

I know that electric is cost cheaper to charge compare to petrol - do not need service etc

Not everything is so perfect with electric cars
1 If it is not Tesla car than prepare for charging station hunting
2 Tesla nearly all station have supercharge if you not Tesla then prepare you will be using unknow charging station with unknow power delivery So maybe will be lucky to find fast charging station but from friend with Hyundai IONIQ 5 he told that this is issue if he travel long distance
3 Battery we have Tesla , BMW , and one Mustang E So this mustang E already have battery transplantation under manufacturers warranty was recall So if you buy used car and will be unlucky with say used battery so the cost to replace battery better buy new car
4 All Electric car using more power when is cold because they need to heat battery to optimal working temperature And for batteries very important stable temperature as they working chemical reaction and higher temps damage battery and lower as well So when will be very cold time outside you will lose money just to keep batteries to normal temp without driving
5 Travel time from Brighton say to Manchester instead 5 hrs will increase to 6-7 Hours depends how often need to charge

The biggest problem is see in future with electric cars is charging stations
I do not have elec car but other people in company do and from they stories is charging station become problems they notice that more and more elec car is charging and no space to charge when you need They always in this mind if they have spare car space for charging
I just can see what's will be in 2 - 3 Years time when everyone will be driving Christmas time

The are good points with electric car as well
1 They all fast Tesla 3 /Y 4.0 Sec "dual motor " to have 4 sec you need V6 Engine etc car
2 No maintenance cost nearly expect brake system or other fluids etc
3 If will be another fuel price increase will be lucky as Elec price not jump so high as say fuel can (edited)
    ariecol's avatar
    Ok I am out

    I do very low mileage.
  25. bilo's avatar
how much does it cost to fully charge ?
    NibblyPig's avatar
    It's 64kwh... so 64 units of electricity
  26. NibblyPig's avatar
Says up to 281 miles, for those curious.

You can get a leaf at costco with the same range for this price also.
    paulde2007's avatar
And it's a leaf with no battery cooling system.

Why are Affordable EV cars so ugly and generic looking ?
