Mac SSD’s which are 256gb are throttled in read and write speeds compared to any of the other sizes.

Also with the sizes of todays games and programs requiring a lot of storage - I’m surprised Apple are still starting with 256gb. You can’t even fully back up your phone to it.

Guess that’s why they have a monthly chargeable cloud storage option….

If you thinking of getting a versatile MacBook, go for 512gb or more before adding ram. The IOS software can actually use the hard drive as temporary or artificial ram, though dedicated ram would be better.

I personally have the M1 air 1tb and 16gb. I can honestly say I won’t need another laptop for quite sometime. But I hope this information helps someone.

They do it because they know most people are stupid enough to pay ridiculous prices for poor specs. They also know that people who rely on MacOS will pay the obscene amounts they charge for more RAM/SSD.

The harsh truth is that this is apple's target demographic. People who have no interest in technology but still want to own tech that would work similarly to products that would require a lot more knowledge to setup.

And no, swap memory is not the same as actual RAM. Why would you suggest taking extra storage that will wear significantly faster when using swap over just getting the RAM upgrade?

You can add more storage with tiny USB C drives if necessary.

Is there a battery performance hit if running parallels and windows? Could do with something with a near two working day battery life.

Literally can’t read the comments on Apple threads here.

This isn’t a windows laptop or a chrome book

Some may want to watch out for certified refurb 14 m1 pro. It’s got mini led 120hz and 16Gb ram and 512storage for £100 more than this.

Got the 13” air M2. Probably the best laptop I’ve ever owned. Has not slowed down or lagged once.

Next laptop will definitely be a pro though maybe the 14” just for the mini led screen and extra power

I have an M1 Air - superb laptop, paid £830 for it when it was new.

Only problem I have with it is it’s only got 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. Three years later and no change? 😬

M1 Pro is better value than this

I ordered one from Apple last week, but with 16gb. That was the better price upgrade rather than the 512gb ssd upgrade. I've got a fast 2tb small SSD instead for £85, which will let me use it for software development, browsing and Netflix/youtube (edited)

Why are so many people defending a company who literally took open source software (again) and rebranded it as their own invention?
