About this deal

Retailers are extending their return policies for Christmas: Full List of Shops Extending Returns Policies for Christmas
Seems like a good deal for a compact 9000BTU unit with a 2 year warranty. Avoiding the homcom eBay ones as I've had two stop working within a year and the company/sellers don't respond. Sonic Direct should be a safer bet.

sorted byTo explain, the portable air con is actually moving air through two separate tubes. Without modification it takes indoor air, passes it through the cold evaporator and out into the room. It also takes cold air from the room, passes it over the hot evaporator and back outside. You want to make this second loop just go from and back to the outside. If you are unsure which intake is which cover them briefly and feel which one stops air coming out the front of the aircon whilst covered.
Two hose systems are really common in countries like the US which routinely have hot weather but here you can only get one hose portable air con for some reason.
With two hoses our cheap Comfee 7000BTU can keep the house at 17C on 30C days as long as you start it first thing. Otherwise it struggled to keep 21C in the afternoon. If you wanted to save energy you could set the thermostat higher... but I don't (edited)
Although using the cold air from the room to cool the condenser seems inefficient it’s important to remember if you use hotter outside air to do this job then the AC system loses efficiency (as the difference between the condenser temp and air cooling it is less)
in absolute terms it is more efficient to do what you suggest but in practical terms for mobile units it’s often offset by poorly insulated pipe work through windows / doors and 2 sets of pipes mean 2 seals that might be poor.
Also a poorly set up dual pipe system can suck in the hot exhaust air into the cooling pipe.
Quite a lot of tests out there show single pipe portable AC units are as good as dual pipe in practice and much easier to install properly.
Pro: far better value for year round usage
Cons: not portable, supposed to be fitted by F-gas engineer (which would wipe out the cost saving)
Assuming it is still the same, but the system was VAT free due to it being included in the government scheme for energy efficient heating. When I had this fitted I wasn't thinking about the heating at all, we live in a fairly new build and the summer months are unbearable at times. After we had our little one, that was the turning point to make us get the air con.
The heating I just thought a gimmick, I had no idea how useful and cheap it would be. I used it almost exclusively for heating during the winter, and just used it as needed because it gets the room warm so much faster than a radiator does. This is where the new build came into its own, as it never gets too cold, just needs a heat top up now and again, which makes this type of 'the room you're using' heating ideal.
Final note, don't forget to consider the visual impact of the the external unit(s) and possible trunking needed depending on setup. For us, it's on the side of the house not visible from the street, it doesn't bother us, but depending on where you want it situated this could be a factor. (edited)
I got a unit off Amazon instead and the WiFi works perfectly on it, it also does heating which this unit did not. It’s about £270 though so a bit more expensive, but that’s what I paid for this one when I ordered it so it was a well worth it trade.
Edit: Looks like it has WiFi control via the app via TCL UK website (edited)
Temptied given the 2 year warranty but there is a 9000btu homcom on ebay for about 202 this weekend (edited)
Some proper retailers (like Robert Dyas) seem to sell the homcom ones so they'd probably take returns if you got it that way. Wish I'd used a credit card as a section 75 claim probably would've been the best bet (though that's not always successful if PayPal is involved).
Get a Silvercrest instead. Atleast it has a good warranty!

And you can't get a silvercrest, nowhere has stock!
Seems like decent price, but no idea about the brand or quality. (edited)
Thanks OP.
Or you could just stick velcro on the internal part of the window opening and then the other side of the perspex and affix. This would be simpler, although not as pretty.
