Seems like a good deal for a compact 9000BTU unit with a 2 year warranty. Avoiding the homcom eBay ones as I've had two stop working within a year and the company/sellers don't respond. Sonic Direct should be a safer bet.

Bit the bullet on this as I live in the third floor of an old house / sauna and work from home most days. It's pretty loud on the lowest setting but produces a nice icy wind and cools my room down quickly after a 20 minute blast. The remote features alot of buttons that don't apply to the model. For example 'eco mode' and 'health mode' whatever that may be. It's a little taller than I thought and the hose is quite thick. But all in all it should make life a little more comfortable during the hotter days. Hope this helps.

Once the room is cooled in 20 minutes, how long until it warms up again and you need to switch this back on?

These are a lot more effective if you get a second tube, use a box or similar to attach it to the air intake that runs over the cooling fins, and stick both hoses outside. That way you are sucking in air from outside to cool the condensor rather than using indoor air you've just paid to cool and blasting it outside. Also if you only use one hose you create negative pressure inside the house so you are sucking in the same amount of hot air from outside as the air con is exhausting.

To explain, the portable air con is actually moving air through two separate tubes. Without modification it takes indoor air, passes it through the cold evaporator and out into the room. It also takes cold air from the room, passes it over the hot evaporator and back outside. You want to make this second loop just go from and back to the outside. If you are unsure which intake is which cover them briefly and feel which one stops air coming out the front of the aircon whilst covered.

Two hose systems are really common in countries like the US which routinely have hot weather but here you can only get one hose portable air con for some reason.

With two hoses our cheap Comfee 7000BTU can keep the house at 17C on 30C days as long as you start it first thing. Otherwise it struggled to keep 21C in the afternoon. If you wanted to save energy you could set the thermostat higher... but I don't (edited)

In theory, that is the best method but it’s not as big a difference as many people think.

Although using the cold air from the room to cool the condenser seems inefficient it’s important to remember if you use hotter outside air to do this job then the AC system loses efficiency (as the difference between the condenser temp and air cooling it is less)

in absolute terms it is more efficient to do what you suggest but in practical terms for mobile units it’s often offset by poorly insulated pipe work through windows / doors and 2 sets of pipes mean 2 seals that might be poor.

Also a poorly set up dual pipe system can suck in the hot exhaust air into the cooling pipe.

Quite a lot of tests out there show single pipe portable AC units are as good as dual pipe in practice and much easier to install properly.

Two breaking down within a year isn't a glowing recommendation
    andylol's avatar
Yeh but this _isn't_ a homcom one

This may be a stupid question, it comes with a sliding window fitting kit. What about a swing opening window, would that need something different? Anyone know?
    RossAdam's avatar
You can pick a window kit from screwfix for ones that swing open £14.99

I'm considering buying AC unit but also want a heat pump for winter. Instead of spending £230 on 9k AC has anyone got thoughts (pros/cons) on buying something like appliancesdirect.co.uk/p/e…2eg ? (12k split with heat pump/dehumidifier )

Pro: far better value for year round usage
Cons: not portable, supposed to be fitted by F-gas engineer (which would wipe out the cost saving)
    pukenukem's avatar
If it helps, I can give you exactly what we paid last year to have 4 rooms fitted with a multi-split (think that was the term, so 4 internal units to 1 external). That was comprised of 3 x 2.5KW LG units and 1 x 3.5kw unit for the largest room. Came to £4,569.75. I've checked our electricity stats and even when we use them through the night, there's very little impact to our bill, it's hard to distinguish the exact cost, but in a good way.

Assuming it is still the same, but the system was VAT free due to it being included in the government scheme for energy efficient heating. When I had this fitted I wasn't thinking about the heating at all, we live in a fairly new build and the summer months are unbearable at times. After we had our little one, that was the turning point to make us get the air con.

The heating I just thought a gimmick, I had no idea how useful and cheap it would be. I used it almost exclusively for heating during the winter, and just used it as needed because it gets the room warm so much faster than a radiator does. This is where the new build came into its own, as it never gets too cold, just needs a heat top up now and again, which makes this type of 'the room you're using' heating ideal.

Final note, don't forget to consider the visual impact of the the external unit(s) and possible trunking needed depending on setup. For us, it's on the side of the house not visible from the street, it doesn't bother us, but depending on where you want it situated this could be a factor. (edited)

I ordered one of these a few weeks ago. Could not get the Wi-Fi to work at all, I do IT for a living so not a skill issue on my part. I tried so many things to get it to connect but the app just couldn’t connect to it, so ended up returning it. If the WiFi functionality is important to you, I would not recommend getting this, I feel like the app is just not compatible with this unit anymore. I didn’t actually bother installing the unit and using it properly but from the brief time I had it on to just test it out, I didn’t see any other issues with it. The remotes also nice, non of the others have a display at this price and it’s quite handy so you Cana actually see what temp you are setting the unit to.

I got a unit off Amazon instead and the WiFi works perfectly on it, it also does heating which this unit did not. It’s about £270 though so a bit more expensive, but that’s what I paid for this one when I ordered it so it was a well worth it trade.

Send me your next batch of Homcom air con to my place please. I'll help you out with the 'disposal'. lol

anyone tell me what the daily electricty cost to run this will be? Lets say based on the current energy price cap, thx.
    Mark_Hickman's avatar
Around 30p per hour they're not cheap to run but a great luxury to keep for the hottest days only, i only put mine on if its like 28 upwards
  9. Gurumi's avatar
    No remote? Good price though.

Edit: Looks like it has WiFi control via the app via TCL UK website (edited)
    sulyl's avatar
I had this a couple weeks ago, it does come with the remote pictured above and is supposed to have WiFi connectivity via the app, but either my unit was bad or the app no longer is compatible as I couldn’t for the life of me get the Wi-Fi to work. I wouldn’t buy this if Wi-Fi function is important. I ended up returning it and getting a different unit instead as I had no faith the Wi-Fi would work even with a replacement unit.
  10. wendy07's avatar
    AC aren't cheap to run.
    LeftHook's avatar
I disagree. I've been using my Daikin AC every night for 2 hours each day for the past 20 days and it's used 5.6kwh of energy in total. That's roughly £2.50 - so not bad at all imo

I don't know about that specific homcom model but no complaints here with this TCL. Compared to my old homcom I think this is worth the extra just for the smaller footprint and warranty. I also think its a little quieter (but still quite loud).
  14. Deen_Adam's avatar
Bought it. Sending it back. Not sure if its not working right, but it feels like a normal fan on the AC setting. It won't even cool my 3m x 4m bedroom.
    Shak5's avatar
Does it make a loud sort of booming noise when in AC mode? That is when the ac kicks in
  15. Nigel_Tufnel's avatar
Absolute lifesaver on the hottest days, I work from home and would happily pay 6-7 quid to stay 22 on a 36 degree day. Price of a pint of lager. No brainer. Then put away when not needed.
    painty's avatar
Does this unit go to 11?

Can't comment on TCL, but my HomCom one was a godsend all through summer last year, and has still been working perfectly for the last few weeks after sitting in the garage for the last 9 months

I liked the HomCom one when it was working, but the company doesn't respond so if it stops working after your 30 days eBay money back guarantee ends then you basically have to throw it away and eat the cost. It would probably cost more to get someone f-gas certified out to try and repair it than buy a new one.

Some proper retailers (like Robert Dyas) seem to sell the homcom ones so they'd probably take returns if you got it that way. Wish I'd used a credit card as a section 75 claim probably would've been the best bet (though that's not always successful if PayPal is involved).

My mate had one of these, wholesome family fun watching the electricity meter spinning like a fruit machine.

Try adding a 7kw electric car charging at the same time!
  18. jsd74's avatar
Or just stack ice packs in front of a fan and swap them every hour. Freezers running anyway
    Evelynne's avatar
Freezers are cheaper to run if they're full too

I was researching aircon this morning before seeing this. Something else worth considering that uses way less power is a home ventilation system which fits in the attic and just sucks the hot air out, creating negative pressure so that cooler air is pulled in from outside. Some of them have heat reclamation so you can run them in the winter to dehumidify. Raises air quality as well. I tried a portable aircon unit a few years back and it made way too much noise, and cost a fortune to run.
    deathtrap3000's avatar
A system like that probably costs a fortune.

TCL = Junk ready for landfill.

Get a Silvercrest instead. Atleast it has a good warranty!

well I've ordered it now. The homecom horror stories described here seem to feel similar to all the Tokyo Laundry (and other terrible retailer deals/horror stories that float around here from time to time). Lets hope i've chosen well.

    Thanks OP.

Hmm, what about the possibility of customising a double glazed window to accommodate some kind of integrated AC hose bracket. So it's just a simple click to attach scenario instead of this current faff with nets & open windows.
    gary333's avatar
Yes, this could be created out of Perspex to retain the purpose of the window. If you're good with measurements (and the windows have been made straight so big if lol) then you could make the Perspex slot in between the upvc frame channel (sitting between the two window seals). This could be friction fitted if you get the sizing exact, or if you have a big window profile then use some foam to shim a seal in place if you feel any wind coming through.

Or you could just stick velcro on the internal part of the window opening and then the other side of the perspex and affix. This would be simpler, although not as pretty.
