Netflix Turkey - Adding Payment Method while actually in Turkey

So when I was in Turkey a couple weeks ago I tried signing up for a new Netflix account. I tried adding my card and couldn't get the card to be accepted even with my local sim I got when I was there. Each attempt kept getting declined without even a request being made to the bank. This happened with my Lloyds, Barclays and Natwest debit cards.

Tried on the website, the app and over chat, and got locked out for 24 hours a couple times as well. Ended up having to sign up using gift cards while I was there. Put enough on for a month and a half and thought I'd try adding a payment method once the account was up and running. Tried couple days later and couldn't get any of my cards to work and was locked out for 24 hours again (chat support informed me).

Gave it a week and tried again using both the app and website and after two declines decided to go for the Web form through the chat help. Even the web form failed. The chat helper said nothing else could be done aside from speaking to my banks, but they told me I have no restrictions on foreign transactions and that they haven't even had any requests that they've blocked/declined from Netflix or originating from Turkey.

Its strange because I tried multiple cards that work abroad and have both direct debits and international online purchases made on them. So seems some kind of loophole may have been closed. If anyones had a similar situation, did you manage to resolve it or do we just have to go through buying giftcards over and over again?

Signing up for a new account while in Turkey (whether physically or virtually) sounds different to the usual loophole.
I think the normal thing (and certainly what I did) is to create a Netflix account in the UK, with a UK payment card, then after a month cancel it.
Then, when you are in Turkey, re-activate the account using a gift card. Then when the gift card runs out, the account already has a payment card on it, and Netflix charge that card.
I don't know if this still works if you are starting today (it still works for me, but I started a couple of years ago), but it seems more likely to work than creating a new account in Turkey, as the UK payment card is validated in the UK.

I was thinking of doing this with my longstanding uk account. Will I be geolocked for the first month if I add turkey gift vouchers?

I was able to re-add a new card through web chat. I used the Curve mastercard and got through fine.

Maybe try doing the same/ using like a revolut card for it and try again?

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I don't have revolut or curve. Not sure if it'd work either as none of mine or my partners bank cards have worked, even tried the Web chat route twice failing each time. (edited)

I'm grateful you've tried. My revolut runs out in 2026 so that's probably when my ride ends. Any information on the loophole helps others so thank you.

Just to add to discussion. I had a monzo set up as payment in Turkey and it worked beautifully for last few years, 4.29 p/m for highest membership. Just logged into monzo app and from this month it's £11.99.

I’m in turkey now. Can’t get past the payment page with either Wise or Starling cards. Thought I would beat the system but apparently not. Was hoping I could do both Spotify and Netflix whilst here. Netflix do offer payment via sim so could get one whilst here and keep topping it up I guess as a last resort…

Has anyone used a visa debit for payment? I’m thinking of using my Barclays accounts I know they have a 2.99% international fee (works out to be 17p) wanted to know if there are any other charges when using for international payment.

Shouldn't be, really should get an international card for stuff though. Specially if you want to travel the world!

    199.99 Turkish lira equals
    5.26 Pound sterling
    Via Chase.
