So ignoring batteries for the minute, if panels are this cheap (lets say 10 for under £1500, what pushes up the price to over 10k.... other components don't seem that much more expensive and if they can fit in a couple of days labour cant be that much? What am I missing here.... apart from a solar installation that I am keen to get

I had my 14 panel solar installed for around £5.7k all in by a local electrician, others were quoting around the £10k mark due to the fact demand is through the roof and they can charge silly money to install whatever they want.

    Main costs:
    Labour
    Panels
    Scaffolding
    Fixings for solar panels.
Wiring from solar panels to inverters and to fuse box
The installer/electrician needs MCS accreditation (otherwise your solar export won't be accepted by suppliers or registered correctly with the network operator and may invalidate your home insurance.) (edited)

I operate a small PV business in the UK. I've been involved with the micro renewables industry since 2008.

When I share that the Chinese companies have been flooding the UK for the last 4 years, I don't share this lightly. Brands like Longi, Jinko, Suntech, etc. represent the lowest end of the market, in terms of price and quality. Often times we are left shocked by how little they care about tech or aftersales support and how poorly their items are made.

If I were an end consumer, I would look up brands that do not have corporate bases in any Chinese city. Manufactured in China may be unavoidable these days but try to avoid the above brands and their kin. Fortunately you still have quality options from other brands that know how to manufacture and treat their installers/ end users correctly.

What are the brands that you would recommend please?

    Thanks OP.

1.Are these the panels that charge all rhe time as I read somewhere that some types, if you get shade on one, it knocks them all out?
    2
Any recommendations for suitable charge controllers, allowing to expand the set up at a later date?
    3. Any remmendations on batteries? (edited)

They will work when there is sufficient light, but it's possible to buy optimisers or micro inverters when shading is an issue.
Depends on your budget really.....Victron are very good charge controllers and as for batteries lifepo4 is the latest tech and is very good. All come at a price though.

Longi manufacture the best quality panels out there so this is a great deal.

I work in the business - no they do not. They are often quoted as some of the worst money can buy and are sanctioned in the US.

    Cheers OP

research needed me thinks as to whether a competent DIY’er could install themselves
up to the point of a qualified electrician needed to link it to the mains.

You may struggle to find sparky to do just that bit, although possible. They would need to sign of the part P which encompasses the whole electrical installation.

405w panels can be had for £90 each at solar trade sales
    dunny06's avatar
That price will be without the VAT highlighted and also the delivery charge which is £95. So when you get to the payment page you will get a shock as the price has creased to about £210 or you could collect if you are near Ipswich to save on the delivery charge. City Plumbing has free delivery. (edited)

Wow, these getting so cheap now.
    Averspades's avatar
Yeah, definitely due to economy of scale and not forced labour in Chinese camps as the MSM would have us believe......

Last week I had solar fitted FOC ( Free Of Charge ) 10 panels invertor scaffolding and electrician all signed of with MCS Cert and Building regs Cert via a government grant Scheme.

This is in a owned property and no limitations after it is fitted it is mine to do what I want and could take it out tomorrow and sell if I wish.

This Grant was for the Merseyside area so always good to check with your local council what's available in your area before you spend £5k plus.

The GLA have a scheme in London (Warmer Homes) but the T&C's require you to let them inspect the install at any time (with reasonable notice) and if you've removed anything they can make you pay back the entire cost of the work which is inflated (£12k for 9 panels/3.8kw with no battery) as the contractors overcharge the GLA.

Bargain! Great for a diy install. Would probably cost you less than 2k for a full 4kw system if you did it yourself and get all your money back in around 2 years.

As a DIY, you will not be able to sell your energy to the grid as you won't have an MCS certificate. So your return on investment is delayed substantially.

Not to mention, Longi is the bargain basement brand of panels. Think Hoover or Candy etc.
  16. ketsunoanna's avatar
These have quite a high OV of 37v, still usable for off grid with an mppt but even better with a grid tie inverter in strings.
  17. Joel_Thomas4vH's avatar
This is a really good deal. I was considering these panels last year for double this amount last year.

So, pretty competant DIYer, what does a basic setup with battery and ability power a few low-power appliances look like with one (or many) of these?
    jay007's avatar
Same here, wanting to know if I can use them for the house lights, TV & possibly for pedestal fan use.
