    This or Roku ?

If you have android and iOS, Roku will support casting from multiple Platforms. Google support only android, Apple TV supports only iOS

I got the 4K one free when I recently subscribed to 2TB Google One. Still haven't opened it (edited)

My sincere advice is not a good option to buy from the Google store. Recently upgraded to 2tb , I had an issue with my order, so they have not yet delivered my chromecast. Still, the mail chain is going on. It's a terrible experience. My option is buy from any other store would be good option. Anyhow, it's your choice

I ordered from Google and it went well. Got it early. Maybe I got lucky.

Still no Channel 4 (All 4) app and the remote is a little slow scrolling (I've found the Google TV app scrolls faster)

It's really weird that C4 won't develop this, especially as they were one of the first on board with Chromecast casting. You can still download the C4 app and cast from there. Once the cast has started, you can then use the remote control as normal. I've not successfully sideloaded the app onto the CCwGTV myself.

I've got one of these and one of the 4k models. They're OK, that's probably the best I can say about them. The 4k one doesn't like my 5ghz wifi and randomly drops off it. It's also sluggish when navigating the interface. The HD model plays iPlayer shows with random black flickers. Aside from that, the ads that appear on the home screen are a bit annoying. They are usually for TV shows or films, which isn't too bad, but there was one for Cartier perfume recently which felt like a bit too far. I don't really want to turn my TV into an advertising billboard! You can enable apps-only mode but the UI is a bit squashed and you have a constant reminder at the bottom that you're in apps-only mode.

For £25 though, it's not a bad deal. I wouldn't pay full price for one of these though. (edited)

I've read that the launcher can be replaced in order to get rid of the home screen ads - ?

Had one of these arrive yesterday, really impressed except for the remote, the lack of a play/pause button
Anyone got any recommendations for a third party remote (or can you reprogram the main one?)

I'm presuming using a firetv remote is out of the question...

If I have a SkyQ box with apps on it already, will this offer anything better (edited)
    Maaark's avatar
The apps you already have access to on Sky box are one of the features of Chromecast.

The 2 main features I can think of (not covered by your Sky box) would be screen mirroring/casting anything direct from an Android phone (or some apps on iPhone that support it), and you can add 3rd party Android apps to this. There are lots of legit and slightly less legit apps that people use to stream media that are not available on the Sky box.

I use the screen mirroring thing to view photos/videos from the gallery on a phone, but if you have a smart TV, it may allow you to do some sort of casting or screen mirroring direct anyway (without needing a Chromecast, Roku etc). (edited)

dont all smart tv's have netflix and youtube installed on tv anyway?
    excuse my naive-ness

Cast from phone or laptop is a nice use of these. Aside from that these are snappier than older tv apps. And have better support for local media if you use Plex etc.
Plus you can stick dodgy apps like iptv on them

Got the 4k stick for free as part of signing up to the one year 2tb offer a few weeks ago...

I've had that £40 account credit sitting there from your pixel glitch a while back, needing to be used.

Thanks for the free Chromecast (edited)

I have a Google phone and it's the only thing that works for me for casting (Spursplay)

2nd gen chromecast still working great! Hot for new owners though
    jujuzeez's avatar
they don't support them anymore. subjected to privacy and security vulnerabilities

this is one off payment for hardware. u only pay for in-app purchases or streaming subscriptions for apps like Netflix, Spotify, Disney+ etc. choice is yours.

cost of living is making people ditch sky and go for low-cost streaming sticks without the faffs

I'd honestly suggest a freeview box if you can. Why give up live TV? Most of cast ability now too.

My dad wants to cast up his photos to the TV, been looking at old Chromecasts, support is an issue and they sell for around £30 anyway. Does the HD cast work with 4k TVs? (edited)
    jujuzeez's avatar
yes it does work with 4k TVs
