I worry that it can be prized off the wall and smashed on the floor with a garden rock🥴
    JUNGL1ST's avatar
They could use the garden rock on a window instead

These can actually increase the cost of your home insurance and if not declared void it. Found that out the hard way.

    Price gone back up

I seriously struggle to understand this (please help) ! What is the point? You might as well put a combination lock at the door. Does this work around the insurance requirement.

It's like hiding a spare key under a rock but more secure. The theory is you put this in a semi hidden place. It can then be used for AirBnB guests or if it's a vulnerable person inside it can be used for welfare checks or if they're unable to get to the front door.

I assume the thinking is that someone smashing this with a rock to get to the keys isn't especially subtle so if they didn't care about that, they may as well just break a window or knock the lock.

These are brilliant.  We use an empty one as a decoy, the actual key is hidden properly. I would not trust this to work as any kind of key safe at all.

Me too, the key is really taped to the top of the drain down pipe but for some reason the carers keep refusing to bring a ladder or shimmy up

I’m sure the elderly and bed bound who have carers calling in daily will make a note of your comments.

I would rather have to break into my own house and buy a new window once every fifteen years than spend my entire life worrying that someone had opened my lock box when I was out, entered my house and put it back afterwards.

Save the money and find a good hiding place for a single key! A key hidden in an obscure place is more secure than a key on display in a ropey box!

I get why these key combo boxes are handy for Airbnb and stuff, but why would an average homeowner use one? You're basically hanging a sign for any burglar that says, "Hey, the house keys are right here in this flimsy box." Anyone with a bit of determination could crack it open. Wouldn't it be better to just hide your spare key somewhere? A thief doesn't have all day to hunt for it.

locks themselves don't provide that much security. You can remove the rubber strip from a UPVC window and pull the entire glass out if you wanted to. All you need is a screwdriver. Similiarly keys like bump keys exist where you can just insert it into a lock, whack it with a hammer or screwdriver and the lock opens up. Someone who's practiced this can do it in 2-3 tries taking about a minute.

These are alright for putting a key in on occasions when a tradesman needs to access your house or someone in the family has gone out without taking a key. It'd be very unlucky if an opportunistic thief tried to gain access to your safe on such rare occasions. Madness to keep keys in one of these when you don't need to.

I can't think of a use case for a unsecure lock box like this. I guess for keys that don't open things that have anything of value inside? Utility rooms etc.

The only thing of value in an air BnB is the cheap as chips TV ... entering someone's house with the key you've just smashed out of one of these is still burglary. I know crooks are thick, but not that thick.

I'd be surprised if any insurer would pay out for a burglary if they used a key from one of these to gain access

Literally takes 10 seconds to get into one with a chisel and mallet

Obviously, quieter than smashing a window (edited)

What about a safe for the key safe?
  20. plath's avatar
we use these for many work site premises. and they do the job. we have had break-ins, but people should be aware that most burglars aren't skilled criminals. they're just crackheads or roadmen who will smash their way in because that is likely the furthest scope of their intelligence.

we had a break-in in North London during covid, through a closed heavy door with a crowbar. they never bothered with any of the lockboxes outside.

Mr crackhead with a crowbar managed to steal an espresso maker, a henry hoover and a mini safe which had £4 in it. he later tried a second time, but was interrupted when the place was manned with security. (edited)

I have one, luckily it gotten broken into before I started using it... Now I just tend to leave an old key in there that doesn't fit any of my locks.

These aren't particulary secure, but I see them all over London as they are popular with Airbnb hosts that don't bother to turn up to greet you.
  25. stuartw's avatar
We have one of these and yes I do use it from time to time, but.... and this is the crazy part, I don't understand why then don't make the strong.
The top and front and thicker metal than the rear which actually holds it onto the wall. So you could smash it off the wall easier and then go about smashing into it.

I use it for short amount of time and work on the belief that as it is round the front someone is less likely to be on display smashing it off the wall, they would just do round the back and kick in the back door
  26. Professor_Chaos's avatar
probably not very secure, but this is the sort of 'safe' you have in front of AirBnB rentals!

next time put some metal on it. platsic is a joke for lock safety.
  29. Ethan_HuntszE's avatar
The security on all of these is very low. As above It can be opened with a piece of thin metal faster than with the combination. There are Insurance approved ones . Still not secure but at least your insurance will cover you if you really have to use one.

Just put the key under the nearest rock like every one else

I put mine under a rock in a village four miles away.
It used to be a village five miles away, but come on, that's just paranoid.

That looks pickable in seconds. Even the leading make (Master Lock) you see on virtually all holiday homes can be bypassed easily. I wouldn't....
