To give you an idea what I'm talking about, I bought an open-box Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5, from Best Buy in the US, for just £230. It had only ever been charged once and it's got a FHD OLED screen, and battery life of 14 hours. The keyboard came in the box, and it will be supported by Google until 2029. For this money, it's the ultimate travel companion and didn't cost the earth.
In the UK, I'd be tempted to spend a touch more for this. hotukdeals.com/dea…844 (edited)
For £126 delivered, I swapped my keyboard straight onto this new one. Brilliantly packaged, mint condition tablet. Battery life at first glance is plentiful. 2 hours unplugged browsing & playing the odd music video and only just to 85%.
Though others have said it's a lottery, it feels this is a bargain for the price. Fair value, even at CEX prices which is just south of £200.
I can't see how to just get the tablet for 128??
Doesn't post to Scottish Highlands.
Forget it then....
The touchscreen is a nuisance unless you have a clear use case for touchscreen and pen (signatures, Photoshop and so on). I disabled the touchscreen on my work Surface Pro because of annoying typo errors when accidentally brushing the screen.
Touchscreen on Surface Pro seems to be a hangover from Windows 8.
The battery on Surface Pros does seem to degrade to a condition where unplugged use for more than ninety minutes is risky. This wouldn't be a huge problem except that replacing the battery is not easy. I'm not sure it's worse than other laptops in terms of degradation (Dell is awful) but the capacity seems to be smaller than most and serviceability is expensive and difficult.
However, in the end, I decided against it and will be using my iPad Pro for this as well:
So, here are a couple points that may be worth considering:
- It doesn't have HDMI, just miniDP v1.2. It will need an adapter and what's worst it can't output HDR.
- It doesn't have USB-C (this was added with Surface Pro 7), so cannot charge from there either and it will need its proprietary power brick to lug around.
Lastly, for the iPad Pro or latest regular iPad and iPad Air models that can output 4k+ and HDR, you can replace Kodi and MPC from Windows with Infuse Pro on the iOS. It is very usable in its free version, for example, it does HDR tonemapping to convert HDR to SDR, beautifies your collections by adding descriptions, images, trailers, etc. automatically, but selecting higher-quality audio streams (other than the default) and some other functions requires in-app purchases. There are monthly/annual subs which are quite cheap and there is also a lifetime in-app purchase for c.99gbp. If you include family sharing, which is enabled by the developer, that comes cheaper than buying this Surface Pro and you can use it on many more devices among your family.
You can then plug in a USB-C dongle for HDMI output, add a USB receiver for an air remote (those that only work with Android TV boxes and not Windows PCs) with a backside keyboard that is recognised automatically by iOS and you get a fully-fledged media-centre that just works. (edited)
