Amazon to roll out ads on Prime Video in 2024 - UK, Germany, Canada, France, Spain, Mexico and Australia

Another ad-tier incoming, this time it's Amazon Prime Video :/

Amazon Prime Video users will see ads on shows and movies from early next year unless they subscribe for an ad-free tier that would be at a higher cost, the tech giant said on Friday.

Amazon's move follows similar roll-outs by rivals Netflix and Walt Disney

The streaming industry has been facing a slowdown in new sign-ups as subscribers struggling with high inflation and interest rates dial back entertainment spending and other discretionary expenses.

The U.S. tech giant said the advertisements will be introduced in the United States, the UK, Germany and Canada in early 2024, followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia later in the year.

Amazon will roll out an ad-free subscription tier for an additional $2.99 per month for U.S. Prime members. Prime subscription in the U.S. currently costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year.

The company added it would share pricing for other countries at a later date.

We should all boycott streaming services. We've gone from paying for a premium service to now paying for access but having to pay extra for no ads.

Absolutely. This will only continue until people start voting with their wallets.

What if you're already subscribed, do you just get shifted to ad supported video?

Probably unless you pay the additional (ad-free) subscription cost.

All streaming services, but especially the likes of Netflix, just need to slow down.

They need to focus on quality not quantity.

We don't want 100s of new shows every year if they only last 1 season and get cancelled without an ending.

Soulless 'blockbuster' movies with big stars attached, that are more paint by numbers types of creations that are more focused on ticking boxes than providing actual entertainment. We don't want them either.

All of the steamers just need to reign in their writers: make things that are quality and that the majority of people actually want to watch. No agenda pushing, no tropes, no scripts that are bland and soulless. Just quality.

If they did all that, people would pay. There would be no need for ads, big price increases or banning on password sharing.

If you build it right, we will pay, and will come.

Agree. Too many Season 1’s (cliffhanger ending). No Season 2. Budget pulled. Waste of time almost. Follow them up if they’ve been really popular. Number of episodes per season can often be disappointing too. Just getting into it then season ends. (edited)

I thought thats what freeview was. so now freeview will be different and prime video will have separate tiers. I dont think anyone subs to prime for the video anyway so i dont think they see a big up tale of the new tier. but i guess they'll make more money from the ad tier anyway.

Assuming you mean freevee rather than Freeview.

Hope they don’t have mandatory ads every so many minutes/in the middle of programmes/movies. They will likely be ads that you can’t forward past.

Ads are annoying but if cheaper option then guess I’ll stick with the ads. (edited)

If you've taken out a 12 month plan, which by default includes ad free viewing, would it be legal to force them you pay extra to take out adverts you'd already paid to not have?

I'm so glad this money will be going to such "faithful" and "high quality" adaptations like The Wheel of Time. Can't bring myself to watch the second season...

There's a "free with ads" selection if that's what you're referring to?
