How much does an MOT cost? The maximum amount car owners can be charged for their MOT is £54.85, while for motorcycles, the limit is £29.65. That’s because in the UK, the cost of MOTs is regulated by the government.

The amount an MOT costs generally increases depending on the number of passengers transported by the vehicle. MOTs for buses with more than 16 seats that need every seatbelt checking can cost up to £124.50, for instance.

View the government-set maximum MOT test fees here.

What is an MOT?An MOT is a mandatory test that makes sure your car meets environmental, safety and roadworthiness standards. They ensure all cars on the road are passing standards designed to protect people, infrastructure and the wider environment.

An MOT is required three years after your car was first registered and then every year afterwards, on or up to the anniversary of the first MOT test. MOTs have been a legal requirement since 1960.

Do you need an MOT?Every vehicle that’s three years old or over needs an MOT test certificate and you must renew this once a year. If you have a car, it is your responsibility to make sure it is re-examined annually.

In addition to the obvious safety and performance issues, if you don’t have a valid MOT certificate you cannot legally drive your car on the road and you won’t be able to renew your road tax. You also face the risk of being fined up to £1,000 for driving a car that doesn’t have a valid certificate.

If your car is involved in any kind of accident, you could be asked to show your MOT certificate. If you don’t have one, your insurance claim may be affected, especially if an injury is involved.

The DVSA has also computerised the MOT test system. This means mobile camera units and police patrols can check remotely to determine whether there is a valid MOT certificate associated with your car. All of this means it’s highly likely you need an MOT.

I recommend taking your motor to the local council test centre and parting with the circa 40 quid that they will charge. You will actually get a genuine pass or fail outcome as they don't do repairs and therefore have no incentive to fail your vehicle.
Could save you a lot of money in the long run and you will know that you haven't wasted money on bogus "repairs"...

Have to say my local branch were excellent. Failed MOT on a fixable fault and they fixed it while we waited. Free of charge and wouldnt take a drink for doing it. No interest in upcharging us. Just did a great job. Bargain!

I've used protyre since 2015 and passed every mot

Same, been using the same protyre branch over the past few years. All passed, no advisory items and definitely no up-sale. And that using the even cheaper Groupon offers (edited)

Lol... £19.95 never gets a no frills pass

Yup, they’re defo failing you on something they can fix. Or they'll probably refer you to a garage where they get a cut

Had an MOT with them a couple months back on £20 offer, sat for 45-60 mins, off i went no drama. Not all are bad i guess?
    EndemicAlarm's avatar
It's more plausible that parts and labour will be overpriced rather than unnecessary. MOT fakery is fraud, being expensive is not.

I had it done last week on the £24.95 deal and it passed with just advisories and I was expecting a fail so personally I can't fault the deal .
    Osiferdribble's avatar
Have you inspected or someone else done a pre MOT inspection ? just curious as expecting a fail ?

Used these guys many times for MOT and tyres in Gloucester, always been great and had free retest

Protyre Weston is my usual garage for MOTs, has been for around 15 years, had the odd fail due to indicator bulbs gong white with age which is fair and they have sorted it for the price of the bulb while I am there. They normally offer good prices on tyres as well.

Got £7 off mot. Booked mine few months ago.... It failed, took the car away for repaired..... They happily retest without fee...... It failed on suspension so elsewhere would have charged but very impressed. Will go there next year eve without code....

Took my wife’s Mini this morning for an MOT, £25 I paid, no problems at all, passed with no advisories.
However, reading some of the comments on here and reviews elsewhere on the interweb I do think some people expect a pass without paying for or carrying out necessary maintenance to their vehicles prior to the inspection?

Honest, i wouldnt of shared the merchant/deal if i thought it would create trouble for members .

Still find it hard to believe garages in England are allowed to carry out MOT tests and therefore create repair work for themselves (which is in their interest to do). The conflict of interest is plain to see.
    dannybacf's avatar
Yeah I'm sure some of them are up to something, last time I used a garage I failed because I had a tear in my side wall of a tyre. Looked like a clean cut with a Stanley knife to me.. funny thing is I also got 2 new rear tyres from the same garage 3 days before and one of them came up as partially worn

Whether this is a bargain depends on your local centre. As with any national chain. Worth a try if you don't have a reliable source.

I wouldn't ever skimp on paying a bit extra for an MOT from somwhere I know won't fail a bunch of minor issues and then charge an arm and a leg to fix them. Sometimes you're fine going to these places, but it's often a roll of the dice. Made that mistake once before, and the garage actually hammered holes in the floor with the scraping end of the corrosion tool, even though they weren't situated anywhere near structural or suspension components, so wouldn't be a failure anyway. I could have easily taken the matter further, but just took it somewhere trustworthy to get it fixed instead. You live and you learn.

Not voted cold by the way OP, just giving my experience. (edited)

I'm guessing Garages have to pay a fee to the Government to either issue each certificate/ pay a Licensing fee yearly?

Can't be much profit at £20, £40 maybe.

How much is retest???? ( I know some item is free)

    Take a look here - protyre.co.uk/mot…est
To qualify for a free MOT retest, the following rules applies:You need to leave your car to get repaired at the same test centre, and the testing takes has to take place within ten working days. In this case, the retesting will automatically be free.

Here is a list of the most common repairs that can usually be done within ten days qualifying you for free MOT retesting:

    • Bonnet
    • Boot lid
    • Brake pedal/ Anti-slip device
    • Direction indicators
    • Doors
    • Drop-sides
    • Fuel Filler Cap
    • Hazard Warning
    • Horn
    • Lamps
    • Loading door
    • Mirrors
    • Rear reflectors
    • Registration plates
    • Seat belts (but not anchorages)
    • Seats
    • Sharp edges or projections
    • Steering wheel
    • Tailboard
    • Tailgate
    • Tyres
    • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
    • Windscreen and glass
    • Windscreen washer and wipers
    • Wheels
Obviously for certain repairs, like those that fall outside of the above list, you may need the services of a specialist mechanic. In cases like this, you are allowed to take the car away temporarily for repairs.

Keep in mind that the following rules are for items not mentioned in our above listing:

    • If you take your car away from the first test centre and repair it elsewhere, but bring it back for retesting within the 10 working days, you pay half of the full price.
    • Supposing you return your car after the ten day period, then a complete MOT test will have to be done and you will pay the full fee.
    • If you left your car at the original test centre, only partial retesting is conducted since they only need to go over the areas which caused the MOT fail in the first place. Partial retesting remains free in this scenario.
    • If your car fails the MOT for the second time during partial retesting, then no choice you will have to schedule a full MOT test after completing necessary repairs. And accordingly you will have to pay the full fees.
Full price being from £29.95 Online (edited)

My mot is due in Oct and I got a quote from my local VW garage where I bought my car from. Is it better to use their mot service?
    pcs7038's avatar
Definitely not. In my experience, dealers are particularly likely to want you do expensive repairs that are not needed to pass.
  21. HwylFawr's avatar
Thanks for posting this. Took my car there today and it sailed through a £19.99 MOT without any advisories. So I am well happy. I think Halfords Autocentres wanted £39.99. So there's £20 saved!
  22. Rebellion's avatar
Thanks OP, this is still working. £14.95!
    I paid £55 last year!!
