Halfords quoted me £750 worth of work on a car worth £500. Did the basic stuff they flagged (indicator bulbs etc), took it to reputable independent and it passed with one advisory.

How do you know the "reputable" one did a good mot?

Never, ever, go near these guys for an MOT.

Had a nightmare experience with them when having tyres fitted a few months ago - complained to the manager who promised to refund £50 back to my payment card but he pulled a fast one and emailed me £50 gift vouchers instead - didn't have the time or energy to complain again.

The annoying thing is, I only had the tyres fitted by them because they had a promo on the tyres plus I had £40 of free gift vouchers saved up which were due to expire.

Even though they are a bunch of charlatans still contemplating taking a risk as I am now back to square one and need to use up the £50 gift vouchers.

Not poking fun at your experience.... Just love the oldie worldly "Charlatans"

Half price mot double the repairs

Yeah I used to go every year, moved and the local Halfords is a rip off. Charged me name £40 for new wiper blade because they knew I couldn't legally drive off without it

Avoid Halfords garages like the plague. Whilst recently having some tyres fitted I sat opposite the front desk and witnessed first hand how they openly and jokingly lied, over charged and generally mugged off customers coming in for work.
For some reason me being a van driver in scruffy overalls made me “one of the lads” so they didn’t seem to mind me overhearing the scams they were pulling with these poor customers. Blatantly laughing behind they’re backs as they arbitrarily cancelled jobs, denied previous work and conversations, sold unnecessary repairs etc etc
I felt like a fly on the wall and would never go back (edited)

My Local Halfords (Ipswich) for MOT's is is good as gold with all my previous MOT's and if failed it failed for a justifiable reason and a reasonable repair cost. I didn't use them this year only as I had a special offer for service and MOT at my local Formula One. Wow, what a mistake. F1 called me at midday to say it failed as it needed 4 new brake discs and pads. Was also advised to have new sparkplugs, a pollen filter , wheels balanced and aligned for a grand total of £950!!! I asked how much just to pass the mot and was told £650 (alleged discounted rate!). Obviously I declined. Had a quick look on whocanfixmycar.com to see how much it should really cost and guess who came out cheapest....My local Formula One Autocentre for £350, a full £300 cheaper than over the phone!!!! A couple of other local garages quoted around the same. When I collected my car I questioned them about the discrepancy and was told "that quote was using the cheapest parts which would cause terrible brake squealing etc and I would have called you back to cancel the booking" When I further questioned them as to why Formula One was quoting on the whocanfixmycar website, he replied rather cryptically "We win some we lose some". When I got home, I looked at the MOT failure reason and incredibly, it did not even fail on the discs and pads, it was the " Parking Brake incorrectly adjusted" with 7 other advisories including "brake disc worn but not seriously weakened"
Therefore it appears Formula One was trying to hustle for work which did not even need doing immediately at a vastly inflated price.
I took the car to the Ipswich Halfords Autocentre 2 weeks later without doing anything to the vehicle and it passed 1st time with just a couple of advisories inc "nearside brake pad wearing thin"

Needless to say will be going back to Halfords for all future MOT's..... Great deal BTW! (edited)

Well done for being specific. So Halfords Ipswich get the thumbs up and Formula One Ipswich get the thumbs down. (edited)

    Never Halfords again!

They are a bunch of crooks I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole (edited)

These discounted Mots are bonkers. Pay 20 quid more and save yourselves the time and a few hundred quid in dubious fails and go to an independent/ council instead. I've heard the nationals have quotas as to how much work they have to drum up from failing MOTs
  10. DJ8's avatar
I wouldn't take my strimmer to Halfords for an MOT, let alone my car!
Had a tyre fitted once at Halfords, car disappeared out the workshop and driven for a good 5 mins then returned - to bed in the nuts they said.
    keefly's avatar
Wow, five minutes. Hopefully your Fiesta wasn't used for a getaway or a drag race.

Oh no! I just booked my car in for a MOT in the Watford Branch and now im panicking after reading all these comments
    keefly's avatar
Relax - I've never had a problem with MOTs at Halfords (and I must have had at least a dozen)
  12. Allan_of_Somerset's avatar
for those in doubt my car (2002 with 86k miles) just sailed through the MOT, they did not try to offer any work, were very quick, polite and liked my car, happy days.

Just wanted to update, my car sailed through its MOT with Halfords yesterday. No hard selling etc. The MOT Tester was a nice bloke who told me to keep an eye on things that may need doing soon. The service guy even tried to get me sign up to their free membeship to get another £5 off but my internet wouldnt play ball.

Overall great experience and went against my fears. Cheers HUKD

Never had a problem with Halford doing MOT, it's very much branch dependant.

And their testers won't be throwing their licence away by passing or failing your shitbox
  15. Golfer95's avatar
Very surprised Lidl have associated themselves with this promotion , won’t do their Brand much good , Halfords do have a very poor reputation .
  16. Likesadeal20's avatar
Wouldn't use em if it were free!
    Jaydizzle84's avatar
You would, but great story. Loved the beginning, middle and end.

Pay full price for an independent garage these places suck u in then rip u off , avoid
  18. raoneill's avatar
I have had multiple free MOTs at Halfords and can guarantee expensive repairs every time. Not worth it.

    Stick to independents.
  19. girag1847's avatar
As far as i know to do a proper MOT test takes around 45 minutes .. to charge the customer £20 they would be losing money ,, most people wouldn't have a clue how much repairs cost if needed ...
  20. jamesconner3's avatar
Took my car to them once because I got a free MOT voucher, they gave me repair list for hundreds of pounds, drove out and directly to my usual garage, passed without an issue. So definitely wouldn't use them even if they were free (edited)
  21. gazzamun_do's avatar
They're not known as Halfrauds for nothing
  22. xxxangelxxx's avatar
Never use Halfords again weng In with one problem ended up getting the car towed away and scrapping even though they kept charging me for parts after parts still don’t know what what was wrong, after googling it heard many same stories, woyldnt take a brand new car there now
  23. davidthesun's avatar
I had an awful experience using Halfords for an MOT.

The Halfords tester was extremely strict and marked faults that should not have been added.

I took my car to a local garage for a retest, and they said a number of the 'faults' should not have been marked as faults.

    Report them
  24. Wadadli_Cooler's avatar
They do find unnecessary work. They tried to fleece my old Mum with brakes and discs on a 3,000 mile Yaris.
  25. Sabeer_Fayyaz's avatar
After reading the above comments, I can say that a wonderful marketing campaign to lure in for £20 and give you an estimate of over £400. Their sales staff is doing a wonderful job!

Ahhhh you lot must have some chancers round your way or you're driving absolute bangers the lads at my local always breeze it through

mot at Halfords Dover for the last 6 years, passed every year
  28. jb90's avatar
Halfords once did work on my car and they charged me for things they didn't do. I explicitly confirmed with them when collecting the car that they had done it. I checked the parts they claim they replaced, they were the same parts I had fitted myself previously, nothing changed. Customer services didn't care. Total scam, avoid at all costs.
    keefly's avatar
Did you report them to the police?

As the OP said. Never had an issue with their Mots either. Had my last 2 there. Most recent 2 weeks ago (edited)

Reckoned they pressure tested my aircon before re-gassing it (legal requirement)... aircon failed before I got out the car park, apparently the 2 holes the size of my finger in the condenser passed the pressure test honest guv...hmm....?
  37. MrRee's avatar
The £20 MOT is a loss leader for them to 'create' work .... I really wouldn't trust them to change my washer fluid.
  38. magpie2468's avatar
There are a couple of branches in Aberdeen. One I would touch with a barge pole but other one has a good reputation.
I pay their motoring club premium & get a free mot included with that so nothing to lose really.
  39. Dutrix's avatar
So where in the app can you find the code. If I click on the HIKD link on desktop or mobile it just take's me to a page to download the app but I already have it. Any ideas?

Fantastic, - installed the Lidl Plus app, created an account & despite the T&Cs saying it "must be completed by 23/12/2023" I booked my MOT for mid-March next year. Thanks!
