HP Omen PC - Question - Do we replace with a budget of £700 or upgrade.

Good Evening.

My Son's PC is coming up to 5 years old and is not as smooth as it once was. Question - Do we replace with a budget of £700 or upgrade.

It's an Omen, with a few more SSD's and 16GB over standard.

i5 7400
1060 3GB
16GB memory

We can get an i7 7700 for £70 (CEX) and a graphic card for £255. Total £335 including paste. Should get £50 for old processor and card = £285

OR would you look something like this for £699 = £300 for the old PC? Total £399

AWD-IT X= Air Mesh Ryzen 5 5500 Six Core Radeon RX 6700XT 12GB

Comparing the old vs the new CPU is 13 percent faster and GPU is about the same. However memory is 2400 vs 3200

Recommendations welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on the exact usage and requirements for the computer, but the original specifications should be sufficient for most ardent, intensive games at albert the lowest settings and lower fps. A proper spring clean, re-installation of windows 10, removing all unwanted software, updating drivers and basic hardware maintenance could be sufficient and improve performance. The question of course is current and future requirements, budget, and competency.

Before you even contemplate an upgrade as mentioned double check the 500w power supply has sufficient 12 volt lines for a GPU upgrade. Then does the motherboard need a firmware / bios upgrade. A few things to consider.

For an upgrade, AMD GPU's are by far the best value, especially now FSR3 here is to compete with the DLSS upscaling of Nvidia GPU's (though only a couple of games are supported, many more are on the way).
The RX 6600/6650/6700 XT's are usually the best value in the sort of price range you are looking at.
I wouldn't bother with the RTX 4060, it's overpriced and has generally been a bit of a let down (you'd be better off with an RTX 3060 Ti).

The 7700 is still a fairly respectable CPU, however Microsoft are doing their upmost to prevent people from installing Windows 11 on any CPU's older than 8th gen so there is that to consider.

If you do go for a whole new PC check out some of Sarden84's deals, they'll usually get you the most for your money -
He posts deals for PC's almost daily so there will usually be something in your price range posted every 2 or 3 days.

Plenty of people on the deals will also help in regard to what's best for the games you play, the resolution you play at, etc.

You mentioned the Ryzen 5 5500 in one of the PC's you looked at, it only supports PCIe gen3 which can be a bit limiting with regards to other hardware, there are other machines around the same price with better CPU's (5600X/Intel 12400F is usually a good starting point). (edited)
