Worth reading if anyone buying one from Giffgaff.

I'm currently in the same situation with my wife's flip 4
The screen protector started bubbling and peeling for the middle edge until over the space of 2 days, worked it's way across the middle and top of the screen.
The phone was bought in April and this started last week
Giff gaff to their credit, took it back, attempted a repair but ultimately just exchanged it for a new one due for delivery tomorrow

The slip seems terrible but giff gaff have been amazing through the process to be fair

I keep buying a fold 4 and then selling it off due to the fear of it breaking. May be give it a try again this time

I'm new to refurbished phones and want some advice. In your opinion, which companies have the most reliable refurbished phone lists?

They are mostly hit and miss, but cheapest electrical, mozillion and GiffGaff are some of the best

    A bit of helpful info.

If you wanted to keep the Samsung Fold 4 and want to make sure everything works as they should, you could call Samsung (the number on Samsung Members App) and they could remotely use smart tutor to do a full diagnostics.

It would generate a full report and also tell you the battery heath, how many charge cycles it's been through etc

Fold 4 just arrived. It's mint

Well what appeared the be a great phone initially has very quickly developed a fault. The phone won't open fully and I will need to return it. That's not giving me the confidence I was looking for. Its a shame as the condition was really good, so we will see what they replace it with. It's a very common fault, apparently. I'll ask for a replacement and hope it goes well from there. If not then I'll probably need to ditch the idea of a fold for now as switching data between phones is such a pain, especially when it's the only device you use and can't really be without it.

    Edit

Giffgaff have just refunded me as they say they have no more fold 4s to replace it with. Disappointed, but maybe a better deal will pop up now the new 4s have dropped in price. (edited)

It only took 8 months before the hinge failed on me - the adhesive/waterproof layer under the top screen had come away which then caused these threads from the brush system to become loose and block the hinge movement, preventing it from opening fully... The inner screen protector also started to bubble. I don't class myself as a heavy user.

Luckily it's still within warrenty, but i don't know the outcome yet of the claim.

As nice as the fold is, I don't think id buy it again, it was worth it, but now experienced it, these phones are ticking time bombs... Also dealing with Samsung support makes you a nervous wreck. (edited)

Anyone bought a 2nd hand fold? I'm tempted but assume there's more to be weary of

There's not trade in but you can use code Blackfriday2023 now for £250 off the Open if you purchase through the one plus app. I was able to combine this with their 10% student discount off the full price and the free buds pro 2r and supervooc charger offers for some significant saving, getting the phone and all the extras for £1189

Honestly seeing the fold 4 deal it's tempting even after what happened last time with mine. The s23u cameras are far superior I'd admit but once you've been able to unfold to a tablet like screen it's hard to be without it. But then again I feel like I'm not always having to baby my s23u which I must admit is a big bonus. Unfortunately I think we're still far from a seemless 0 compromise fold. The display tech is still in its infancy no matter how samsungs marketing tells you it's "glass"
    vassy4u's avatar
I preferred S23U to the fold. Superior camera and safer option.

    The scaremongering in here
Bought my Fold 4 nearly a year ago for £700 from Giffgaff through a similar hukd post. Dropped it more times than I can count on all kinds of surfaces, had ice-cream seep in through the hinge (don't ask) and not a single problem except some nicks on the metal side. Have the free case in the starter pack with certainly helps, but you do not need to "baby" this phone at all. Won't go back to normal phones again.
  12. OhTheMajesty's avatar
I got the Fold 4 in vgc from GiffGaff a few months back. It was almost as new, and of course came with the 18 month warranty. Checked with Samsung and its only 6 months old so also has the remaining 18 month Samsung warranty. BTW, wonderful phone
    Whitey2048's avatar
Having never bought a refurbished phone before how do I check the warranty information with Samsung? I assume I give them the IMEI but is there a particular dept I can call or email? I could Google it but as you've obviously just done it I'm hoping for a simpler answer to what I might find online. Thanks in advance

Just to update. Had mine a week now. It was rated 'good' but it was like brand new and still had the plastic protection on some of the sides. I didn't get a pen with it, but I'm not that bothered about that.
  14. welshinzaghi's avatar
I bought a 'good' condition Fold 4 from Giffgaff last month and it was anything but good. Front screen looked like it had taken a slide across a hard floor with a lot of light scratches and a couple of deep gouges. The inner screen had a lot of microscratches on the right hand side and the protector was showing early signs of peeling by the top hinge. It was a very interesting device otherwise... I'm totally going to get a foldable when the right device/price is out there

There's one good Xperia 1 IV at £349 and a very good one for £399.. and don't forget Topcashback with these phones.

Think it is nearly £40 at the moment, in return for activating and cancelling the £10 SIM. (edited)

Regarding the warranty not covering broken screens, does this mean if (for example) half the screen goes dead due to an internal fault, that this is not covered? Or does this just refer to physical damage caused by the user? Thanks.

Fold 4 and 5 are quieter same except CPU.. but price difference is significant

The phone developed x4 faults after 8 weeks, in order :

    1. Crackling noise at hinge upon opening fold
    2. Inner screen protector bubbling eventually all along fold line
    3. Dead pixels eventually all along inner fold line
    4. The inner screen eventually totally unresponsive to touch, frozen screen display.

I called Samsung, the admin booked me in to attend at EE store in Birmingham bull ring for 3rd party onsite repair staff to repair on site if they can or the staff would post out to Samsung if they could not repair.

However a staff member had a quick look at the phone fault and immediately replied their 3rd party repair staff onsite would not repair the 'level of fault at his glance' and advised to call Samsung to request dealing with Samsung directly and to request a return package. I called Samsung and booked for a DPD guy to collect tomorrow.

That is a really good price for Fold4. I have Fold3 still, bought new from release date and it is going strong without any issues. Battery sucks, but as long as it takes me through a day, it is OK. And yes, foldables are fragile so if you will be opening and closing it 100+ times a day, work in dusty environment - this phone not for you, as it will be breaking now and then. I leave mine unfolded when at home, sort of a tablet. And when I am out and about, keep it folded and use smaller screen for quick txts or calls. This way inner screen is like new on mine- no de-lamination, no bubbles or cracks.

A second hand Fold? I do base jumping with a used parachute that gets repacked by the kids at the local nursery after use... But this deal is too risky for me.

My wife received hers today and Id say "good" is an honest condition score.
Front screen has two minor faint scratches and a few really small scratches on the bezel scratching the paint but the inside is perfect.
My only criticism is i feel they could have done a better job with cleaning it. The speaker area and around the hinge was a bit dirty but for the price its good.

Ordered the Z Fold 4. Good for £499 with the ability to return was worth a punt to me
    Quidco tracked at £50 too

Received my Z Fold 4 today. £499 good condition looks brand new. Can't see a mark on it at all. As long the internals are ok, I am well chuffed
  24. fantasist's avatar
Purchased a beige one, thought it might be in a better condition given its a less wanted colour, let's see what turns up later today
    davidoriordan1's avatar
I'd have thought the opposite in that a lighter colour is more likely to show off marks? Best of luck with it anyway

Got one for me and my wife in very good condition. They look brand new. Hopefully it will continue to last. But I am very happy with it, coming from a Note 10+ 5G. Hardest part seems to be finding a good case
  26. Whitey2048's avatar
I've finally gone for the fold 4. At less than 20 quid a month it's worth a shot. As far as I can see, if I'm not happy with the condition when it arrives I can just return it. If I am happy with the condition then I have 21 days to try it out, and if I don't like it for any reason, I can still just return it. Hopefully I'm not missing anything there, but seems like a pretty safe bet through an established company.

check previous deals for the device from the same retailer. That should help

nice price on the fold 4, I had a fold 3 which developed a fault with the internal screen and Samsung ended up giving me a full refund, with that money I bought a s23 ultra and a tab s8 ultra and honestly I prefer the s23, the screen is better for games and videos because of the aspect ratio and obviously much better than the outside screen. also the pen being in the phone means I actually use it but the fold 4 pen case looks far better than the fold 3 one so maybe that isn't a huge deal anymore. Still for the price that is a lovely phone and its a joy to browse the web or read ebooks/comics on

My fold 4 in good condition arrived today - absolutely superb. I'd rate the condition myself at excellent. Minor scratch on the odd bit of the body, very faint scratches dotted about have to look closely. Very pleased.
    unclecuddles's avatar
Mine too! A couple of small faint scratches on the front screen which are not noticeable unless I shine a light on it. Aside from that there doesn’t appear to be any marks on the body or the internal screen.

started the transfer -process from my old phone now.

    Z fold 3 in stock--399£
  38. Romi's avatar
When mine arrived 2 weeks ago, looked in good condition . After 2 weeks the internal screen protector was coming off from top down the central fold line. Opening and closing of the fold sometimes sounds like crisp packet being crumpled. Still moving from ageing Samsung note 9, this is still an all round decent upgrade. I will see if Samsung warranty will repair and will be v happy.
