Can I get Home Broadband without a landline?Yes. Our 4G and 5G Home Broadband hubs don’t require a landline as the routers use our mobile network. Discover our Broadband only deals to strengthen your at-home connections.

You can get a three mobile business unlimited data sim for £5 + VAT per month and buy a 5G modem outright for around £150. This is what I've done and I get 300 down, 100 up. MC7010 is the modem I bought. I installed it on a mast above my roof line. You can enter in whatever business name you want, it doesn't matter.

Much lower cost of ownership long term for broadband. ISPreview has several threads for the different 5g modems and how to get best performance/troubleshoot issues. For me, there's a few cell masts round here and there's a small learning curve to figure out which gives best performance and cell lock it if the modem doesn't default to it.

I had virgin broadband only for £60 a month before this. It's paid for itself in 3 months. I'll save thousands over its lifespan. (edited)

Wanted the Three business SIM but they insisted on:
    • Proof of address for your business
    • Proof of ID – this must be a passport, driving licence, UK biometric residence permit, or national ID card
    • Your 3 most recent monthly business bank statements

Guys, before buying this: get a Three SIM into a 5G mobile phone and test in different rooms of your house, at different times. Once you get decent speeds, get a business unlimited SIM from three, and buy an indoor modem router. This will improve the signal further. If you want to go geeky, buy external antennas. Do not waste your time with the three 5g coverage checker or any cellular tower maps and distance metrics. These are my lessons learned, I am on 300mbit with a 10ms ping for £6 a month, in a non 5G area with the nearest mast app. 3miles away.

Any suggestions where to get a Three business unlimited SIM? Seems to be 20 now.

Do you get to keep the router when your contract is up?
    steve252's avatar
    AFAIK 4G yes 5G no.

Anyone actually tried using this? I am planning on getting it in Leicester
    Ashish_Gargqal's avatar
Before buying this, you can buy a smarty one month sim to try out speed as it works on three network.

If you get a good speed with the smarty sim in mobile, then same sim or three's sim in this router would definitely provide better speed as this router has stronger antennas than mobile to catch 5g signals.

Also, you may consider using topcashback website to purchase the smarty sim to try.
Considering the amount of cashback the effective cost of one month smarty unlimited data plan sim would be significantly low. (edited)

Don't sign up with these unless you are certain it will work. I cancelled within 30 days and had confirmation of return and I am still being charged 3 months later! I had confirmation of the return of the router on the 27th of October! Just spent an hour on chat to still be told it needs confirming as received. I like three as a service but much like my experience with the home broadband after 5pm they suck recently. What i would say in the east midlands I have moved to EE and I get much better data and phone signal strength on 3 and iD than on EE as a whole.

I know the pain. Exactly the same happened to me. They're run by incompetents. Returned the router, gave them tracking number 3 times, still got charged for the device. Took 2 complaints and over 1 month to get the money back. No compensation for the hassle.

Also, you might have good speeds at the beginning 400-500mbps, but after a while it will be unusable. Even netflix would buffer. Web pages took forever to load. Not reliable. Also noticed that they will throttle speeds. How do I know? Wife got mobile contract with them. Did speed test from the same room with the router, phone was still blazing fast, router slow. Even restarting the router did not help.

Good as a backup maybe, or if you got no other choice.

Has anyone bought a new 5G modem and experienced better stability?

The Zyxel and Three is terrible
    KodaBear's avatar
The ZyXEL NR5103 is one of the better routers out there for 5G broadband.

I think in this situation it's the Three network that's letting you down rather than the equipment. Not everywhere has the greatest coverage with them.

Check BIDB.uk and see who else has good 5G signal where you live then get a SIM from one of the other networks to try out. Hopefully one of them is less congested and more stable.

If you can get Vodafone signal, then the TalkMobile SIMs are available with unlimited 5G Data for £16 a month on a rolling contract with no price increases. And if you do want a different router to buy, try the ZTE MC801A or MC888, or if signal isn't great then get an outdoor 5G router instead for better performance.

Works okay if you have solid 5G in your area. Only issue is Three. This weekend we didn't have internet for half a day. It happened before few months ago. (edited)
  8. DrBay's avatar
Just don't do it. We have had this system for the past year and it's terrible. Internet speeds vary wildly between 150mbps to 5mbps. Frequently drops out. I would cancel the contract if it were possible.
    neones's avatar
Reach out to three. I was in the exact same situation and just said that I cannot use it because of all these issues. They accepted to cancel it
  9. veedubjai's avatar
So hardware downgraded. You would have thought more antenna, better reception stability just to save a few bob at the expense of keeping customers happy. Bad business practice only leads to customers leaving. Very smart move, Three UK? (edited)

get a smarty sim and Ebay 5g router
    all good
    you do not need contract
    it is a rip off
I use this since 2 years in south of england without any issues, backup solution for virgin, gaming, streaming works well, though places like central london you might get only 2 megabits

I went for three and zte broadband 2years ago, broadband zte mc888 1month later stopped working and neither three nor zte helped ,I asked many times device is still faulty and 18days later I can sent and get rid of that stupidness. freedom is everything , do not even query it. listen him , is right

Anyone using any WiFi extender with this router please ?
    KodaBear's avatar
It would be advisable not to use extenders but rather go for a mesh solution. Extenders rarely do good things for your home network.

Three can bundle Eero mesh devices with your router if you ask them to add it to your contract. Otherwise you can buy your own cheap mesh system. Places like CeX are often good for that.

Three are currently providing two different routers at the moment. The ZyXEL NR5103EV2 and the ZTE MC888. Both have either IP Passthrough or Bridge Mode if you wish to use a mesh system without issues.
  12. BrianButterfield's avatar
It is better to buy the router and get the sim separately because you have to send the router back so you're over paying for nothing. I've got £9 a month unlimited on Three through a cashback deal and the NR5103E router and it works well. I would stay away from the V2 though if you want to use the USB port, if you want external antennas or if you're going to use the lan. They're all much worse on the V2....
    Scarlet_Pimpernel's avatar
What was the link to your Cashback deal? THREE have changed a lot of the deals and you can no longer the the £5 a month business data sim

briefly go for UNLOCKED device without contract

buy a new/near new NR5103EV2 from ebay that gives freedom of switching network ,forget others (edited)
    Ashish_Gargqal's avatar
Today I bought V2 locked to three from CEX Romford for £120 and it's working fine with Lebara Sim.

What's the best 5g router for three at the moment?
    KodaBear's avatar
ZyXEL NR5103/NR5103E (The original, not the V2) is probably the best you can buy at the moment. Followed by the ZTE MC888/MC801A.

Don’t do it, it’s crap speeds
    GoldenMagikarp1's avatar
    Really ? I got over 400/500Mbps on 5G
  16. BrianButterfield's avatar
How is this router? Cause The last good one they used was the HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro 2.
    cantonbean's avatar
To be fair I found the ZTE very solid (unlike the service) and it was unlocked as well. What I would say is versus the HUAWEI it required much more mucking around to enable modem only mode.
  17. Masteryates's avatar
I did a test with a 4G box and Three for a couple of weeks and found the download speed to be as good as my BT landline. The thing which killed it though, was a much slower ping speed, which made general internet browsing much slower, as on many occasions I would click on a link to get a blank page, which would then refresh a few second later and load. If you are using sites where you have to log-in, this can mean sometimes the connection is lost, and you have to log-in again which is very frustrating. No issues with signal strength etc, as I can literally see the masts.
    KodaBear's avatar
5G Tends to be lower latency than 4G.

Mobile broadband is a hugely variable technology, but just to give you a comparison I get 70ms ping on 4G but can ping the same server in just 21ms over 5G.

It will never be as low as a fixed line fibre connection, but at 21ms it should be more than enough to not only browse the web but even play online games with relative stability.
  18. DeanDeanDean's avatar
You don't get any half price months if you go through TCB, you pay full price, £22 per month.

    You sure get half price.
If any doubt, go via TopCashback compare.

For a fast and simple plug and play solution though this product and service is great but check your 5G network coverage wherever you decide to plonk the router before signing up to a contract.
  20. lloydee83's avatar
This router looks new , I only got this 2 months ago and have a different router
    KodaBear's avatar
You must have signed up JUST before they changed. It’s the exact same model but just the V2 version of it.

It’s a little smaller in size, but actually slightly worse specs. Yours will have 2.5Gb Ethernet ports where this is only 1Gb. Also you can only connect 2 external antenna cables with this where the original allowed 4 connectors.
  21. Gohan_dbz's avatar
    AVOID!!!

The speeds were poor, at times I would run a speed check. Speeds seemed okay but watching YouTube it was constantly buffering.

Also returning the device is a nightmare. Posted back over a month ago can't even get a simple confirmation that it's been received. I keep getting chaser emails to say I haven't returned it. Terrible customer service
    hukdplan's avatar
My experience was completely the opposite, good speeds, very stable, no problems with returns. I suggest people try out the 5G service with another SIM(Smarty?) before ordering.
  22. roadie's avatar
Got the sim and router- mc888 for £11 plus VAT,24M MONThs business deal.
  23. BrianButterfield's avatar
Having looked at the V2 vs first model, it seems like the V2 is worse. It has USB 2.0 instead of 3.0, the lan is only a gig and not 2.5, it only has 2x2 external instead of 4x4.
    KodaBear's avatar
Correct. The internal antenna is also poorer and much more directional. You have to point it a certain way to get the best signals whereas the V1 would get a good signal and hold onto it no matter where it was facing.
  24. Rocky96's avatar
    Hi Guys,
What if 5G doesn't show in my region?
    KodaBear's avatar
Then you can take a 4G/4G+ Contract at the same price and get the benefit of being able to keep the router as your own at the end of the contract rather than having to return it.

Alternatively you can order it instore if you'd rather rent the 5G Hub. But if 5G is available where you live and the website says no then buying instore generally isn't too advisable either. If they won't sell it on the website it typically means the network is congested in that area so your speeds may be slower than expected.

You can consider other networks too. If you get your own 4G or 5G Router you can get an unlimited SIM only at a low price from other brands to use with it which may offer a better experience for you.
  25. empiboy's avatar
52457147-SlwUd.jpgThree shop you choose the 5g hub then choose SIM plan. £22 for the 24 month plan and £25 for the 1 month plan. Anyone got this on the 1 month plan then cancelled and kept the hub?
    KodaBear's avatar
You still have to return it when you leave.

They don't always demand it straight away, but you'll get the demand sooner rather than later otherwise it's a revised final bill with a non-return charge imposed on you (and the router can still be blocked even if this is paid)

If you're trying to do this to get a router, just go somewhere like CeX, CGX, Cash Generator or Cash Converters to buy the router yourself, with warranty too. Taking out the contract and cancelling won't go the way you hope unfortunately.
