I’m not sure I’d pay this much for one but my £3 Asda one is brilliant for starting the BBQ. No more lighter fluid or fire lighters. Just some paper and a few small twigs underneath.

I've had cheap and Weber, both do the same job and I wasn't that impressed with the build quality of the Weber for the money

The issue I have with these is that by the time the heat gets anywhere near the top (which granted is not long), most of the coal is so well lit that you only have a fraction of the burn time left. Stopping early and having half lit and half unlit, rather seems to defy the point. So I'm still struggling to get my usage technique right with this (as much fun as they are, and as quickly as they do light coal). (edited)

Good guide here for briquettes weber.com/US/…tml and adapt to your needs, main point for me don't tip the briquettes till the orange flames have completely disappeared and the briquettes and you just have white hot coals showing on the top (that is when they're at their hottest) A full chimney of properly heated briquettes, should give you a good 30-45 minutes of cooking time for a direct heat BBQ before you should need to add more briquettes

The quality of briquettes you use can also have an effect, the cheaper ones burn out much quicker in some cases than the more well known better brands....

Lumpwood slightly different it heats up quicker but can burn quicker in the BBQ when cooking and need topping up more regularly. For the chimney Starter it will continue to glow more orange than briquettes but let the flames disappear and the top ones are ashen white, before tipping, good picture below

Tell me you've never used a Weber version, without telling me you've never used a Weber version.

these are great to cook steaks on, they reach a much higher temp (quicker too) and uses less charcoal. Just put a grate over the top. Sure they're small but for things that don't require longer cooking times and/or lower temperatures they're perfect (and very well built compared to the Argos/supermarket versions. (edited)

The portable version is the best version.

For most people a single chimney from the portable version will be enough for 90% of their cooking needs

Yep I'm kind of using the portable a lot more and my trick is also to use a hairdryer to speed up the process

I've a child to do the task of lighting the BBQ. Just got to stop him using firelighters in the gas one. Bless.
