Mayor Oliver Coppard, said: “We’re delighted to see the very first fully electric buses arrive in South Yorkshire. They are just the first of many that will start operating in the region over the next few weeks, with the support of the Mayoral Combined Authority. Electric vehicles are critical to decarbonising our bus fleet, achieving our net zero ambitions, and improving air quality for South Yorkshire’s residents.”

In addition to the new buses, a brand-new second route for Sheffield Connect is being launched to help people get access to even more of what the city centre has to offer. The new route will link The Moor to Castlegate and West Bar and run every 20 minutes.

Cllr Miskell continues: “Sheffield Connect, along with the brand-new second service, is not only fantastic news for passengers and those looking to get around our amazing city centre, but it will also help to support the economy allowing people to shop, eat, drink and relax more easily.

£1 a ride if you don't fit the ticket criteria "TicketsSheffield Connect is free to ride if you have the following passes or tickets:

    • a valid senior or disabled travel pass.
    • any valid Zoom travel pass or NUS card.
    • or a bus, tram or train ticket bought within South Yorkshire that is valid on the day of your journey.
If you don't have any of those, don't worry, it's just £1 for a single journey - cash and contactless accepted."

It's a good deal, but like most city centres, sadly much of Sheffield city centre has closed down so has relatively little to attract people there.

Indeed. It's hideous now. An eyesore.

This is amazing. What's galling is most places could be like this but we've been bogged down in culture wars for the past decade. What a waste of time.

I've always fancied an electric bus, don't think my licence would cover me driving it though.

Nice to see a good news story associated with electric transportation for a change.
I'm personally sick and tired of all the electric transportation negative stories in the press. Being blamed for everything from breaking up the roads to running over pensioners on their way to purchase the Daily Mail....

Cheers for posting this Chanchi, it's a shame they haven't updated their website yet to say that it's free for everyone. Won't use it personally but it'll be really useful for a lot of people!

Well done to Sheffield for providing this service. It's a shame other mismanaged or corrupt councils can't do the same thing!

Do you think the council fork out the money for this! All these services that look good and are free are actually paid for by either the locals in council tax or through national taxes. The portion of my local council tax that pays for the Mayor and all his nice ideas has just risen 200%!

Sheffield use to have free buses but they closed it down its good news for the people who lives in Sheffield

Leicester has a free Hop bus (themed like a frog with noises). The only problem is during peak times its packed used by groups of lazy college kids, so not pleasant to use during those times

Such a pity that Sheffield centre resemblances a wasteland thanks to the council.
There's disused bus shelters everywhere. Guess what they have done with this route. They've wasted more money by putting up new bus stops and left the disused shelters. Sheffield centre has to be the worst in the UK out of the major cities. It's all down to council policies and mismanagement

Wow, someone not grabbing money by all means, and introducing something free for public! Still paid by our taxes, though.
