I got my 3 delivered on the 28th of March from the previous deal.
I also took out the extra 4 years Insurance with each drive with adding to the basket.

    The UK Amazon Page Version

    amazon.co.uk/dp/…h=1

These drives are sold on the UK Amazon site as Amazon EU, which does not state the warranty like on the German page.
Has anyone gotten confirmation that these drives come with a 1-year warranty if sold from the EU to the UK?

    The German page version

    amazon.de/dp/…dpx

It states On the German Site:
The product is refurbished, fully functional, and in excellent condition. Backed by the 1-year Amazon Renewed Guarantee. This pre-owned product has been professionally inspected, tested, and cleaned by Amazon-qualified vendors.

You can see these drives are sold by the vendor, Digital Emporium GmbH.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These drives have a 3.3-pin power issue...
They may require the 3rd power pin taped off with non-conductive tape or use a Molex-to-Sata power converter.
(I used electrical insulating tape I had around the house.)

Here is a link to a tutorial on how to do it, along with a YouTube video from the tutorial.

    instructables.com/How…s-/

    or the YouTube video below.

The Best 3rd Pin Fix I found was over at

    forums.serverbuilds.net/t/g…806

    I bought
    amazon.co.uk/gp/…c=1

Then removed the wire nearest to the L on the power connector In the above link tutorial

    TESTS:-

I ran Unraid preclear (with pre read, zeroing and post read) No errors

These drives have been in the server for around 6 days now and are running very well.
I guess like anything it's a Gamble on Refurbished drives (edited)

Thanks for posting this detailed info. I'm planning to use the 16gb one I've ordered in my unraid server too. If it's fine I'll order another.

I bought 2 of these 12tb a week ago. Arrived yesterday.

    I currently have a 4 bay Synology NAS with 4 x 3tb drives and I will replace 2 x 3tb drives.

The 12tb’s arrived with dates of Feb 2018 and 36000 hours (4 years) and no errors. The 2 x 3tb I’m removing have 68000 hours (7.7 years) and have no errors.

    I’m very happy that I bought the 2 x 12tb.

Reading some of the Amazon reviews, I think I'll give this a miss. Lots of people receiving drives from 2018 and with thousands of hours of use. Cheap for a reason.
    golf_r32's avatar
Thats true, but most of these drives have a MTBF of millions of hours. In theory they are more reliable than consumer drives. No doubt its a risk though.

Warning for anyone looking at buying these, they have PWDIS! tomshardware.com/new…tml

This means that if they receive 3.3v power on pin 3 of the SATA power cable they will not start. A bit of tape over that pin will stop this happening!

    I originally thought:
I bought two of these for non-critical media storage, both dead on arrival.

Just had to cover pin 3 and boom they work.

For info, one drive is ~22,000 hours and the other was ~27,000 hours. (edited)

These 'referb' big drives from Amazon EU seem to be a bit of a gamble. Some reports of quite high usage ones being received, but the Seagate Exos 20 16TB I ordered the other day had a manufacture date of January 2024, and zero power on hours.

    Was this the refurb ~£160?

Mine are not exactly noiseless. They are almost continuously clunking at me - even when I'm sitting back looking for inspiration. ie not knowing what to do next. It's quite reassuring in a way - but it does rather puzzle me WHAT it's doing, when the computer is essentially idle. Optimising search queries, I suppose.

I don't know if they can reset the hours - which seems kind of sneaky. But mine case with very little hours. So, far, all not quiet on the Western Front - but they seem to be doing the job ok,.

Can these be used in cctv?
    Horrorwood's avatar
    yes
  8. davocc's avatar
Eeeek - had so many of their fixups and all failed, this is a drive and brand I recommend to all of my competitors.

Buying refurb hard drives is like buying refurb condoms. You might save a few quid but not worth the risk.
    rendeverance's avatar
But they have been 'washed', 'renewed'
  10. Turbofunk's avatar
Couple of questions, does that 4 year warranty apply to this? And is there much difference between these and Seagate Exos enterprise drives?
  11. golf_r32's avatar
Does the accidental damage warranty that pops up when you add to cart actually apply to this product?

The terms say Amazon renewed, rather than just refurbished, so not sure it does. (edited)
    welshblob's avatar
I read the terms, I don't think it does apply. Bought a couple anyway.
  12. FlamingSpaz's avatar
£93 from Amazon US all in, and classed as Amazon renewed so you get 1yr warranty + can buy the 4 years

    amazon.co.uk/gp/…c=1
    lazyfatboy's avatar
Would returning it to Amazon US not be hugely inconvenient ?
  13. Midge's avatar
Might try this as a back up.

Anyone know of a good enclosure that would suit this?
    fsa's avatar
I wouldn't use these as backups if they are likely to be unreliable.
I would use them in a multi-drive array with backups & the 4 year warranty.
  14. Supersoul's avatar
I received the 10TB version a few days ago and I've spent the last two days testing the drive. My drive has an uncorrectable sector count of 22. The drive is quite noisy too!
  15. gbmonkey's avatar
Beware these could be refurbs from data centres. So as much as they are professionally refurbed, they mechanically may have thousands of hours on them already.
    LinaBell's avatar
indeed . bought one last time and has been operated for around three years.
  16. MaxJenson's avatar
Amazon does not have technicians who refurbish electronic equipment, of any kind. They are returned items that have simply been powered on (at best), and then resold under the refurbished term.

If you want these types of drives, then look on places like Marketplace for new old stock / office supplies. So much stuff was left behind during COVID.

You can end up with boxes of high capacity drives like these for £100-200 prices. (edited)
    fablanta's avatar
Really!? You think that refurbish means that Amazon does nothing to them? That would tend to make the term returns redundant. Don't you think they they would outsource the refurb., especially as they are a high-priced item? What is the source of you knowledge?
  17. Del_miniw76's avatar
Quick question.how do you see how many hours use drives have had ?
    golf_r32's avatar
You need some software that will read the SMART values on the drive.
  18. DrBay's avatar
I buy almost all of my electronics refurbished, but I've never done this with hard drives. I'd be interested to know what experiences people who have actually purchased refurb drives have had.
  19. mankymanning's avatar
Got a couple of these a few weeks ago when they were 120 each. Both has large number of hours on and they are quite loud but I will stick with them. As mentioned above, the enterprise drives are a different beast to consumer ones.
