Bought the original steelbook set from zavvi. Arrived damaged due to poor packaging. Took MONTHS to get a refund.

It's the same 2k scan of previous blu-ray versions that has been upscaled to 4k and had a load of DNR applied to it that makes horrible smearing and other strange abbarations occuring (see Gandalf's staff hovering as he passes the white tree of Gondor in ROTK). I preferred the look with film grain retained. Older versions have noticeably more detail despite being a lower output resolution.

Colour grading is a subjective preference but personally I preferred the look closer to the original DVD extended edition release rather than this Hobbit inspired grading.

As a collector this is a kick in the pebbles when zavvi do this ( inglorious basterds!) That being said , lovely set for those who missed out .

I would like to get myself this (or some other collectors edition of LOTR) but do they keep remaking/releasing new editions every so often so loses value or is something like this set worth buying and holding on to? tia.
