This new peat free stuff is awful! Doesn’t hold water and is like wood chippings! I appreciate we are trying to save the planet but I wouldn’t buy this stuff again after using it for years!

It’s crap you get gnats and all sorts coming out of it. I’ve two unopened bags from last year that I haven’t used because of this. (edited)

Presumably upvoted by non gardeners? Or is this stuff any good? I'd really like to know which peat free composts are actually effective in germinating seeds and raising young plants. Then I'll buy it.

This stuff is fluffy and fibrous. It looks like a mixture of wood fibre, composted bark and coir. It has green waste compost in too, so unfortunately you'll likely find bits of plastic depending on the batch. It's a bit too rough for seed sowing on its own, at least for small seeds, but would be OK if you sifted it. It would be fine for young plants since they don't need a super-fine growing medium. The Westland peat-free that was on offer at Costco recently is quite a bit finer and likely more suitable for seed sowing. I have not found any plastic in the Westland so far.

I tried peat free a few years back because I wanted to do the right thing but had to switch back because the compost was garbage. If anything it's got worse. Its not like manufacturers haven't had sufficient notice as the ban on peat has been known about for years. I'm using the Levington brand at the moment. It's early days but the seeds have germinated, so thats a start. I'm finding I have to be very careful with watering though as it goes very soggy. I have found a few stones and the odd shard of glass in the bags I've used so far.
I might experiment with using sterilised garden soil next. Apparently you can sterilise it by baking it in the oven or microwaving it. (edited)

Use Coco coir, use cal mag or molasses as feed, as it's got calcium and magnesium in it, then use rhizo fungi in compost mix in some pearlite, and feed any organic feeds, I use fishmix

Keep repeating and you can reuse, no bugs, no mould, great (edited)

...seems to be council waste now and I have suffered slugs emerging from it too.....used to be a handy product for some potted plants like chillis but no more...

I am currently in the process of growing green chillis and peppers which are thriving in "westlands grow sure". These are 50lx3 from b&m for £15.

It's also my first time attempting it this year so any advice would be appreciated. (edited)

You need a very low nutrient compost for germination of seeds.... That's what seed compost is. I agree this is not a patch on peat compost but I don't think it's on sale in UK anymore.

I agree. Don't try sowing seeds in _any_ general/all purpose peat free. With these new peat free composts you have to use seed compost for seeds.

I have found all peat free composts to be awful. I know we couldn't keep digging peat out forever, but these are a poor,poor alternative.

Like others have mentioned this compost has a lot of twigs and doesn't feel like compost.Think your better just adding your own pellet feed when planting. Got 3 50 litre bags from B &Q for £15 that's the standard price or 1 bag £6.

This stuff has yellow slow-release fertiliser balls in, it should feed for longer than your average bag of compost.

You can buy decent peat free compost but it's expensive, my local garden centre sells wonderful peat free compost at £12 for 40L bags.

Tbh despite all the complaints above I'm using the organic version of the above and everything is working as expected.

Thanks for sharing your find as your first deal post to the community , Its a great price for your find, but unfortunately there are some mixed reviews for this specific compost . Congratulations on your post getting past 330 heat as i type this, that's a tricky achievement to complete, so great job hitting this with your first post .
