3 DETECTION SETTINGS: Metal mode is ideal as a metal detector, while Drywall and Live Wire modes are optimized to act as a stud detector and cable detector, respectively
SUITABLE FOR: Detecting objects to avoid drilling like when fitting a wall cabinet or heating system, or for finding objects to drill into such as detecting wooden studs to fit drywall
3-COLOR INDICATOR: The LED ring around the center marking hole turns red for a detected object, yellow for a nearby object, and green when no object has been detected
PRECISE RESULTS: Apply voltage to the cable being search for, remove jewelry & gloves. Hold the device flat against the wall and hold it firmly by the rubber grip. Move it over the area at least 3x.

I've looking at these but they get very mixed reviews, probably due to user error. I understand you need to either avoid touching the wall, or also use your other hand to earth it?

I use one of these, and get strange readings until I earth it by putting my other hand on the wall beside the device. Once I've done that, I always get accurate results

Surely Tinder or Grindr is the more modern approach?

you need this to flush the fake studs...

Lots of s/h ones for sale on Ebay.
That could be read two ways but for me its not a good sign.

Mine ended up on there - didn't find it reliable at all.

I just use a pin pointer that they use for metal detecting.

I tried this model when looking for studs through the ceiling - absolutely rubbish for my use case anyway. It was sooo inconsistent - I just couldnt trust it for studs at all. Electric it was better at though. It went straight back. Studpop magnet thing was much better for my use case. Paid about a tenner for that. This looks like a great price though - I tried the £220 model not sure if this is different - it was still rubbish though for me even at that price (edited)

This seems to be like most of the reviews I see of these products. I went for the Bosch Truvo A/C and metal finder for my purposes. I looked at some of the Youtube reviews of the Bosch stud finders and they were abysmal.

Honestly. My colleagues call this the doubt machine. As more than likely it’s having a false positive day.

    Wouldn’t recommend.

I have one of these and my opinion on it is mixed, I would trust it for certain things and less so on other.

Thing that it is good with:
    * Detecting energised mains cables - assuming you ground it properly with both hands

Thing that it is somewhat ok with:
    * Finding metal (frames, pipes, screws, etc) - generally ok

    Thing that adds more confusion:
    * Finding studs - unless you have a dry wall with a meter of void behind, it beeps at everything that's behind the wall and adds more confusion than being helpful, it can go on/off without me even moving the damn thing! (edited)

I've bought 2 different bosch stud finders and they basically just beep when they feel like it. Followed all the instructions and advice and I just feel like it's constantly making fun of me.

You can get "tribute" ones of these miles cheaper but I present. The Carrot.🥕.

I've had expensive ones and cheap ones. They rarely work and generally fail at any point so can't be trusted. Pilot holes and magnetics work 100% of the time and cost nothing.

Wife sent this back as was unable to detect a stud in the bedroom using it....

This thing again!?! Why does it not just die!!! It’s garbage.

Worth the premium over the cheap £20 ones on Amazon?
    Ridg's avatar
The cheap Amazon ones don't work, you're better off with a strong magnet (for finding studs) the basic Bosch is great for metal and cables.

I've got 2 cheap amazon ones and they just don't work consistently

Any good for plastic water pipe detection?
    burnduck's avatar
It seem to beep at everything so I'd say yes?

Use one of these most days at work for drilling. Not failed me yet.

I think a lot comes down to recalibrating it and also following the instructions that state to run it over the area you’re checking a few times.

Once I’ve done this I find it pretty reliable at centring on the objects you want to avoid.

Admittedly in some instances with certain insulations it will just illuminate red across a large span of wall. If its plasterboard a discrete hole with a screw driver to have a poke about is generally enough to determine if it’s safe to drill externally.

Very useful device for those ladies whose main goal in life is to look for studs

I was thnking of trying to get / borrow one of these but from the comments(and cost), I'm not so sure - Any tips for locating beams when trying to move a ceiling light?
