For anyone not in the know: it's worth noting that the 81% score listed here (and things like the Metacritic score) don't really begin to reflect just how good this game is.

It's a weird case of a game coming out as 'solid' (maybe a 7.5 / 10) and then the developer spending YEARS working on making it better and better, long after the original release.

The 'Afterlife' part of the name refers to a massive free update which enormously reworked the game, adding huge new areas, relevelling it, rearranging the map, and lots more.

Essentially, through years of hard work, they basically turned a 7.5 game into a 9 or 10, but many of the reviews reflect how it was originally, and the review averages consider everything since it's original release.

In short, don't be put off by 7/10 reviews from 5+ years ago, as they barely have any bearing on the game as it stands today. (edited)

Just finished Metroid Dread (and went back and played Metroid Fusion on GBA via Switch - really recommend still holds up excellently) loved Axiom Verge and was keen to play the 2nd one and Cookie Cutter. Heat. (edited)

Instant buy. I own half of them on other platforms, but there's so much good stuff here. The original Axiom Verge and Death's Gambit Afterlife are both 10/10 games, and probably worth it on their own.
