It's annoying these only come with a kit for a sliding window which hardly anyone has

Thanks just bought from Wayfair for £234 with £15 off code. Been looking into this a while. Wayfair can spread the payments too using klarna.

In the winter I use a home made bung made from old socks. Inside is a aluminium pipe. Never feel any draft or anything from it. I rented it from Smiths Hire. I think it was a 100mm diamond tip core. Most Aircons now use 150mm pipes. I bought a step down attachment from B@Q. Never had any issues. Handy Tip. Angle it slightly down so any vapour runs outside. (edited)

We have an attack room with 4 angled walls and a small dormer window. It’s quite a large room but like all attic rooms can be hot in summer and cold in winter.

I like the idea of this but can see it being really hard work and expensive to run.

    Any ideas?

what do you mean by really hard work? Also it is expensive to run. I think this summer it could be around maybe 50p an hour, dont quote me on it I havnt run mine yet. Saying that, youd only use it for the hotter days and its nice having that choice. Do you sit in your room uncomfortable after a hard day at work and barely able to sleep, or do you just pay a fiver and relax? That freedom is nice.

If by hard work you meant installation its no hard work at all. You just need a window for the venting hose. You dont need to have the right window too. Some cardboard or another material and tape to seal it works wonders. They also sell specific seal kits like these:

    amazon.co.uk/Por…8-3

    amazon.co.uk/Uni…8-5

Edit* just realised you mentioned you had a window and its type, silly me . Ill leave my comment as is though. (edited)

I bought the white one last year and it was brilliant. You could feel the room cooling instantly.

it’s not powerful enough to do more than one room (I.e can’t leave on the landing and hope it cools down the whole floor) but certainly enough to do a large space.

    Same brand, homcom.

asom.co.uk seems to belong to homcom.

mhstar on eBay also seems to belong to homcom, and is the supplier for this Robert Dyas deal.

If you buy from those three places, the item will be shipped by the same company.

Homcom basically imports a range of Chinese Air Conditionning Unit (many models from many Chinese manufacturers) and just puts its brand on them. Many models share the same internal components, just the external look & feel and controls are a bit different. (edited)

It says it shuts off when the tank is full. I thought ACs chuck the humid air outside? Do all portable ACs do this? Because I've got one and don't think there's a tank in it, unless I haven't been paying attention.
    tomtomato's avatar
    tomtomato
They all have a built-in tank that can self evaporate or get full. Many machines also have an outlet to connect a hose to a bigger outside tank or drain.

anyone know what delivery company it uses? is it possible to change a delivery date?
    tomtomato's avatar

Usually Yodel. Yodel would advise on delivery date and then time window. I don't know if changing the date is possible.

Usually, despatch is quick and delivery is next day.

In my case, a signature was required, but the Yodel guy just dump the box at the entrance of my block of flat. (edited)

I got this unit for £249.99 Last year and it's pretty good. External vent hose does pop off the back fairly often. Still worth the extra £20 a year on with the recent price hikes on almost everything. (edited)

Could you say is it good for larger rooms and how is it on electricity?

Anything else anyone needs to know about the machine?

Anyone know the hourly electric costs to run one of these units these days?
    tomtomato's avatar
    tomtomato
Probably using 1,000 Watts per hour so 1kWh or 1 unit.

Standard rate is £0.34 for 1kWh, or around £1 for 3 hours.

Probably lower in reality, as it would be using 1,000 watts when the compressor is on, but compressor is not on all the time. I have a similar portable air conditioner, and my smart meter IHD is showing that the compressor goes on and off. (edited)

I really want to fork out for a proper setup but I just know I’ll regret it as you only really need it for a few days in england. Ideal if you completely refurb or extended a house I guess as it would be easier to route all of the pipes etc. (edited)

Why don't they just make these machines like fridges and cool the air in the room simply using an internal refrigerant and a fan without requiring all this faffing with holes in the walls or blacking the windows etc in order to vent the hot air... ???

Does anybody know of one like this, and I don't mean the ones which you have to fill up with water constantly? (edited)

Just use the plastic bags you get from Iceland, free and can be used to keep the hot air from coming back in. Also it doesn't have that annoying sticky residue that comes with the window kits costing £20~

Not blown away by this thing. Think I read a review somewhere stating "it's the best FAN they have ever owned", and it's pretty much like that, if you're at a 45deg angle to the machine.

Got a regular sized room and its not chilling it as much as I had expected. (edited)

I agree, I have put it in my daughters room as small and chills it perfectly, for a large room it would struggle.
