An amazing movie, arguably the best war movie since Forrest Gump, could be contentious, but so I personally feel.

IMDB Rating of 8.3 imdb.com/tit…74/

Synopsis
Acclaimed filmmaker Sam Mendes, the Academy Award®-winning director behind "American Beauty" and "Skyfall," focuses his lens on the Great War in "1917," which follows two young British soldiers, Lance Corporal Schofield (George MacKay) and Lance Corporal Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), on a dangerous mission in enemy territory at the height of the conflict. Featuring cinematography from Academy Award® winner Roger Deakins ("Blade Runner 2049"), the World War I epic is directed by Mendes from a screenplay he co-wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns ("Penny Dreadful").

Personally I thought the film was awful so was thankful I got to see it for free and didn't pay to see it

Good price to watch an excellently shot film. Interesting story and some very good acting but the continuous shot look was the standout part of this film to me, very impressive!

Just out of curiosity, what made it so awful?

I thought it was absolutely brilliant!!

Tempted but read the Amazon reviews, now undecided.

I'd ignore the negatives on here/Amazon etc.

IMDB has it at 8.3/10 from 345,000 reviews which is a better guide. Usually anything 7/10 and above is worth watching.

You are right, the continuous shots make it so real and absorbing. Also an interesting happenstance which added to the drama nytimes.com/202…tml

Not sure I’d call Forrest Gump a war movie but either way 1917 is excellent

Marmite film - director made the film up of various shorts which on their own are great but together it’s all very vague

Worth a watch if free IMO if not nah

The whole thing from the start to the end. Possibly because I listened to all the hype before hand, but when I watched I was seriously disappointed, thank god I got a free code from Vodafone to watch it for free. But tbh I can't recall watching a film for a long time where I've actually thought wow amazing

Surely this is already posted under the Parasite deal; hotukdeals.com/dea…716

Why is that permanently locked as expired? It isn't - the offer is still available.

One of those films that you just have to experience in the cinema, or at the very least a really decent home theater setup, can imagine a lot of people would be disappointed otherwise

    Beautiful gripping film (edited)

No, it has some war scenes in it but definitely not a war film.

One of the biggest disappointments this year for me, one of those films that left me thinking 'was that it'?? I know I'm likely in the minority but this is overrated. Good price for rental I guess but I'm certainly in no hurry to watch this again. Just my opinion.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing! Particularly amusing to know that the two grips had to dress as soldiers for the camera handover!

    Watch for yourself, and decide.

    Personally I thought it’s a great movie.

Fantastic film, really lived up to the hype. Can’t speak highly enough of it. It’s back in the cinema here in N.Ireland due to cinemas reopening and a lack of new releases. I’ll be going to see it again on the big screen soon.

I just watched this two days ago. I enjoyed it a lot when I was watching it, but I was thinking about it the next day and realised just how little there really was to the whole thing. It probably does help to see it at the cinema (I was belatedly planning to go just when Covid shut them all down), but I'd still very much recommend it, especially at this price.

I watched it on our 9 year old 42" 1080p TV with sound through a 2.1 soundbar and thought it was an excellent film. True it's the sort of film which would definitely benefit from a quality home cinema system but it still stands up well on a far more basic system like mine IMO. (edited)

1917 is a particular type of film designed to get the best out of surround sound/Atmos/HDR technologies to tell a story.
You can add to that list Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down and 13 Hours. These films are designed to capture the viewers attention with story and AV. The stories are interesting and presented with skill. But if you at least have a 5.1 audio system then they will also immerse you into the environments and into the battles.

Midway is also a stunning AV experience and I enjoyed it a lot, but as a film it is not in the same class as the others.

Well it wasn't the best thing ever, therefore by classic internet decree, it's one of the worst things ever made. There is never anything in between.

I'm not generally a war film person, but absolutely loved 1917, really engrossing and the one shot works really well. It's not got like a big story, it's just following 2 people delivering a message essentially, but it works really well.

I'm actually surprised people didn't like it, it was one of the best films of the year!

I find it so strange that people either absolutely loved this movie or absolutely hated it. It is one of my favourite all time films. I was really conflicted between this and Parasite for best 2019 film.

This film was awful. if you want a saccharine take on World War 1 then this is for you, as all the soldiers have perfect teeth, perfect skin, perfect trenches, etc. Then, the continuous shots just get annoying, like you're watching a live episode of Casualty or Eastenders. Crap acting, no plot, Germans who are worse at shooting then Star Wars Stormtroopers and magic paper that doesn't get wet. And too many coincidences. This is a 4/10 movie.

Comes nowhere near a great war film. Look no further than Saving Private Ryan, All Quiet On the Western front, Paths Of Glory, Das Boot etc etc
