"SSDs use NAND Flash memory, which is the most expensive yet indispensable component of the device, in addition to Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) as a cache for writing data to the SSD and for storing and recording its data mapping tables; since it is about 100 times faster than NAND flash."

"The DRAM on an SSD is used to store data mapping tables, which keeps track of logical blocks and their physical locations in NAND. On DRAM-less SSDs this mapping table is stored in NAND. Since NAND is slower than DRAM, DRAM-less SSDs’ performance may be slower than SSDs with a DRAM cache. However, Virtium’s engineering analysis concludes that SSD performance highly depends on the specific workload."

DRAM is dedicated memory that is up to 100x faster than the storage modules that make up the main storage of the drive. This allows data to be cached on the DRAM to improve performance, so sustained write performance is kept resilient using DRAM. DRAMless drives typical use HMB (Host Memory Buffer) which means it uses the computers RAM to cache the data. Depending on the workload you may see benefit using DRAM. Typically for a general consumer it doesn't really matter and it is the tolerance of the NAND memory which is more important and also the quality of the NAND controller which is more important.

Didn't understand the above? No probs >

DRAM - Dedicated memory to improve read/write performance which is up to 100x faster than the main storage of the drive
DRAMless - Uses a tiny portion of the computer's RAM (so the 16GB, 32GB etc you usually see a computer come with) to perform a similar function as DRAM
For the general user it doesn't actually matter and it is the quality of the NAND memory and NVMe controller that is more important.

Whilst this is a decent deal and not everyone needs 1tb, you might as well pay the 10-13 extra to get 1tb gen 4 drive with cache.

my motherboard only seems to support gen 3 , or would gen 4 be backwards compatible ?
