As a family we now use one each when using Ryanair for a week in Spain.
pays for itself the first time compared to hold luggage costs.

That's interesting. You'd all have to upgrade to Priority boarding to take these on board and I've found the extra cost of the upgrade is pretty much what we needed to pay for a hold case between us.
We usually juggle between one of us flying priority for the cabin bag or maybe neither with a hold bag between us. We're light packing adults though and not a family where you need more luggage.
