Born for handheld gaming
AMD's Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor powers this incredible gaming machine. Built on the cutting edge 4 nm process, this silicon features both the Zen 4 architecture and RDNA 3 graphics. Featuring incredible upscaling technologies like FidelityFX Super Resolution and Radeon Super Resolution, the Ally can boost framerates while retaining excellent image quality. ROG worked in close collaboration with AMD to unleash the full potential of this cutting-edge hardware, and the Ryzen Z1 Extreme is here to take the gaming world by storm.

MicroSD expansion
If you have a larger game library, the Ally has you covered. A dedicated UHS-II microSD card slot allows you to effortlessly add high-speed storage to your machine, letting you keep more of your games installed and ready to play. Boasting nearly the same load times as the dedicated PCIe Gen 4 SSD, you'll never need to worry where you store your games.

Game on the go
Play your favorite games and content for hours without worrying about a charger. Enjoy many hours of gaming locally on the device, with long time of video playback. The Ally also supports fast charging, enabling it to charge from 0-50% in a short time.

Zero gravity thermal system
The ROG Ally is designed to let you play anywhere, so it needed a thermal solution to match. Traditional thermal solutions count on gravity to help heat pipes cycle heat out of the system, but with a specially constructed pipe that uses a mesh, the Ally truly defies gravity.

Anti-Gravity heat pipes
Anti-Gravity heat pipes improve thermal transfer by using a mesh for the wick, increasing capillary pressure by more than 15%. This allows the Ally's cooling solution to maintain effectiveness even when upside-down.

Fluid dynamic bearing
Both fans have a fluid bearing design, which is a tried and tested style that will keep the Ally spinning like a top for years to come. Fluid bearing fans also are low friction even when run in non-traditional orientations, letting you hold the Ally in any direction without worry.

Zero distraction
While many handhelds on the market opt for a single fan, ASUS knows that extra airflow is always beneficial. The Ally is equipped with two fans, allowing better cooling at slower speeds to keep noise to a minimum.

Lightning fast, crystal clear
A high-powered machine needs a top-spec display to match, and the Ally has specifications that just a few years ago would have rivaled gaming laptops many times its size. Sporting a 1080p touchscreen panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium support, this 7-inch display is truly a joy to game on. With 100% coverage of the sRGB color space, you can trust that all of your content looks exactly as the game makers intended.

I'm so torn between this and the steam deck. On paper this wins. And I have a lot of games that aren't on steam (as well as a lot that are)

But, I really don't want to deal with the issues surrounding windows and the possible Issues with the ad card slot on this. Battery life seems shorter too

Has any one had use of both and are able to comment on their experience?

Got both and the Legion Go. The Steam Deck is great if you have mostly Steam games, you can run non-Steam games but it's a bit of hassle and less than perfect.

Windows runs most things fine but isn't configured for handheld use all that well so it is often seen as the best and worst part of the Ally. SD card issue has been fixed now I believe but early adopters got burned (like me). Ally doesn't feel as nice to hold as the Steam Deck subjectively speaking. Battery life definitely shorter on the Ally as you need to allow more power for the best performance but if you play with a power bank or on mains power, it's not a problem.

Ally has much better hardware spec, if you have games outside of Steam then that would seal it for me to choose the Ally even with the compromises - honestly I'd take one of the refurb deals at under £400 and then put the saving towards a bigger drive.

Why is this so cheap now. Is a new one coming out?
    plewis00's avatar
Likely seeing a new one soon, there are loads of refurbs floating around under £400 and it got a bad rep after the SD card fiasco and ASUS's impossibly bad handling of the situation - that said, it is a solid handheld with tons of power if you are ok with Windows.

I'd really like one of these, but I'm a technophobe and probably wouldn't understand how to put games on it or use it. People tell me I'm better off with an SD as it's a bit more like a console and wouldn't take me as long to learn how to use it. The problem is I want to be able to download Game Pass and don't want the hassle of getting it on the SD. Can't win either way really

In the case of the ROG Ally, it's just Windows - if you're familiar enough with installing software on Windows, this won't be too different. There's a wealth of information on YouTube for both the Ally and Steam Deck, you'll bee able to find the answer to pretty much anything you need.

These don't feel as nice as the steam deck to hold, but I did sell my steam deck after getting one, if U set up the games right they look and feel great

These felt nicer for me. It's subjective and one opinion means no more than another

Maybe possible to get it for less. I was sent a 20% off code but I'm sure new accounts get the same.

Using one right now, highly recommended. I do like it with Windows since I use it as a portable PC with a monitor. Got mine excellent condition off ebay for £329.10 with 4 months warranty left.

A this price brand new is worth it, for £400 its a great price.

Can't see much performance increase on next gen for now, the 8845HS is nearly the same chip but with AI.
