Given alcohol duty has just risen to record levels, this could be the last time to snag a great whisky staple for under £40 if not £50 in the near future.

So much fearmongering over the alcohol duty raises around HUKD lately Yes, they've risen to "record levels", but these things only ever go up, like inflation. Every time it rises it's "to record levels." Also, they put a freeze on the normal increases since the start of COVID, so while this is a historically large hike, under normal circumstances there'd have been a few smaller hikes already over the last few years, and they'd likely have added up to the same.

The duty on spirits is going from £28.74 to £31.64 per litre of pure alcohol.
So on this 0.7 litre bottle of 46.3% whisky the duty was £9.31, and the new duty is £10.25, an increase of 94p. Not exactly bank-breaking, is it? If the price goes up by £10 as you suggest, don't let anyone tell you it's because of the extra duty. If producers, distributors, and retailers all take the opportunity to increase their profits and blame it on the duty, don't fall for it.

This whisky has gone up a lot in the last couple of years, it wasn't long ago that the special offer price on it would regularly be £30. But none of that increase was due to the duty. There are a lot of reasons why whisky (and everything) prices have gone up, and duty is the least of them.

One caveat I'd like to add: I'm not trying to defend the government or their alcohol duty in this country, which is so high that it's the main reason you'll notice all the booze being far cheaper when you go on holiday in Europe. But they've been taking the p* on that for decades, the latest hike is mere insult on top of injury. (edited)

I was wondering what the actual numbers were - thanks for confirming. Though it perhaps should be noted that there's VAT on top of the duty, so it would actually go up by £1.13 if they just add the extra duty to the pre-VAT price.
