Got excited there when I saw the thumbnail in my alert feed. Have been keeping an eye out for a deal on the regular version.

The difference between the Family Edition and the Regular Edition is primarily the board. It's a 6 piece 'jigsaw' instead of individual hexagon tiles and the resource tokens are pre-printed on to the tiles instead of being loose.

The advantage of this is it's slightly faster to set up.

The disadvantages are there are less combinations of setup available plus it won't be compatible with any expansions.

Additionally the playing pieces in the Family Edition are plastic. The Regular Edition has wooden pieces.

Don't get me wrong you can still get hours of fun out of this version. The gameplay is the same. You'll just have fewer play board combinations and be unable to add any of the many expansions should you want to do so.

Heat added as still a great price for a fantastic game! (edited)

I would have thought that the family edition would also change wood to timber

The resource names are more fluid and are just really different names for the same thing:

    Wood, Lumber, Timber
    Ore, Stone, Metal, Rock
    Brick, Clay
    Wool, Sheep
    Wheat, Hay, Grain
