I’d also say the 3km range is only going to be seen in really wide open sparse countryside.   Realistically you’ll not get more than a few hundred meters in most urban environments.

    Can these be used abroad?

Radio waves don't abide by international boundaries, you could even use them in space.

    For a more serious answer:

PMR446 radios use frequencies that in Australia, the U.S., and Canada are allocated to amateur radio operators, and military radar systems.[6]

Instead, the U.S., Canada and Mexico use the Family Radio Service (FRS) system, which provides a similar service on different frequencies, around 462 and 467 MHz. These frequencies are allocated to the emergency services in Europe, notably the fire brigade in the UK, police in Russia and commercial users in Australia.[7] Interference with licensed radio services may result in prosecution.

Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu and Malaysia use the UHF Citizen's Band system in the 476–477 MHz range and a maximum power output of 5 W giving improved range over the lower power PMR system.

PMR446-compliant equipment may be used anywhere throughout Europe.[8]

Type approved PMR446 radios with power up to 500 mW can be used without any licence in India[9] and Vietnam.[10] The devices may not be base stations or repeaters, and must use integrated antennas only. (edited)

    Hi all,

Random question, would these be good for small events, I run an events company would these work in places where there is no reception? As in for me to speak to caterer and sound and lighting…
    dam14n1's avatar
Yes they would but you'd be better off with a CTCSS model this way you can page specific people. If you are doing it regular you can get a licence from Ofcom for about a £75 for 5 years and use the licensed event frequencies with more power and privacy

    Great deal..over and out

I said over and out to an ex-army guy and he got quite upset. Apparently it can’t be over and out as over means over to you and out means end so it’s confusing apparently 😳

Can I connect more than one pair for example have 6 in total and we can all communicate with each other
    gavin1's avatar
Yes there are only a few set frequencies.

I would add there is not privacy on these. The privacy codes will help mute other peoples transmissions on your device, but do nothing to stop others listening in to your transmissions

With unlimited minutes on all mobile deals. Unless you want to be connected in rural area with no mobile signal I am unable to comprehend a use case for this! Tora Tora Tora

While most of the population are quite urban-centric, most of the country itself is pretty rural. Lots of townies like coming to play in the countryside without realising that mobile reception or coverage can start out quite poor and then be affected by a lot of factors, some of which can change quickly.
They're very useful in large buildings where mobile reception may be acceptable outside but inside that fringe reception becomes almost useless - it's why W/T get used a lot in warehouses and supermarkets cos they're mainly metal boxes and it saves on a lot of shouting.
Someone here posted about two pensioners using them between aisles in the supermarket last week!

does anyone have an idea of how long the battery will last if these are kept on? It seems to have some battery saving feature which may make them worth keeping on longer than other radios
