At first, I thought the printer must be faulty, as my Kindle Fire HD 10 Plus tablet works in that room, albeit with a weak wifi signal. I simply set the printer up in a room much nearer to the router and to my relief it was absolutely fine. Your mileage may vary, as the saying goes, I guess, but we have thick walls and a pretty crappy Virgin router with not-great wifi range.
Re some criticisms about paper jams. Though I've had a rare few, they have if anything been rarer than other printers I've had over the years.
Criticisms that it shoves out blank pages now and then; again, I've had that happen, too, but no more so than with other printers I've used, I'm sure there must be a good reason why printers, now and then, do that. A non issue, for me.
Not mentioned in the reviewers, if I have a criticism it's that occasionally it spends (quite) a long time silently 'thinking', or whatever, before it starts printing (even if it's just text) but, again, that's rare; it's rare that it doesn't print pretty much at once and quite sprightly with it Also, in terms of a warm up/wake up routine, it has been quicker than other printers I've owned/own.
Not sure where all the good reviewers were hiding but I guess people are more inclined to leave a review if they've been frustrated by something, and if you're impatient setting things up with your purchases, maybe that's where some of the negativity is coming from, I'm not sure.
For me, it has been reliable and, for a basic office duties non-pro office printer, I'm really pleased I bought it. Though construction is, sign of the times, a bit on the flimsy side, I would without hesitation buy it again for home office use, not least for the excellent ink refill system, which though it sounds faintly crazed to say, was great fun!
If the price is good, I feel the advantage of buying things in store, you can use it the same day, avoid clumsy delivery folk, can check there's no dings/crumples in the packing box that indicate a possible drop.
Despite some initial disappointment about WIFI range, which I don't think the firmware update improved, not helped by living in a house with thick walls and a really crappy Virgin router, I've been really happy with ours, I managed not to bounce-shake it to bits! The worst I can say of it is that, a few days ago I found that it can take a while to have a think before it starts scanning, I need to look into that, it's not something I noticed before. Our Virgin router is really flaky, that might be it. I have a proper sheet feeder scanner printer from HP (the printer part lasted only a little over a year...).
Possibly I've just left set the resolution too high, having recently scanned some old photographs but it's a pre-scan think, rather than a during-scanning thing, so that can't be it. I'll troubleshoot, or connect the Epson to the computer via USB, tomorrow, and report back here. I've got a WIFI range extender I'd like to try out at some point, suspect that will solve it, though plan is to replace the Virgin router.
Silver linings wise, I've always found returning things with Costco to be a stress-free breeze, which is why I've stuck with them; they are apologetic and friendly, much more like my experiences of customer service in the US, as compared to a certain high street retailer, over here, where sure doesn't feel like the customer is king once they have your money.
I hope you manage to score some other bargains at Costco to make up for that distant commute. To catch some early morning sun, I'm walking there, today, going to look at televisions, again. Can't see myself inch-walking a heavy 55" home! Perhaps I could make a huge cardboard side pocket for my bicycle but... I think I would topple over sideways during that insane walk!
Hope your return is a good experience and if you don't replace it with another, you score a bargain on an alternative, be good to hear about it.

You will need to convert it with something like this.
I bought it for a specific reason, the obvious reason. Filling the ink wells was easy, relatively quick and completely mess free, an absolute delight after years of refilling cartridges that gave patchy results and using third party cartridges that were sometimes fine but sometimes inconsistent. I would buy again. Hot.
