Unfortunately this means going to Carlisle.

Or use the tokens that have been in local newspapers recently to buy Northern Rail day rangers for £10 each.

That's a great photo,you're too modest

Carlisle is (in parts) a beautiful city. The castle is where they held Mary queen of Scots and changed hands many times, Rudolf Hess was also held there. The ancient and sadly incomplete city walls and beautiful small cathedral, look up at the roof is well worth a moment. Foxes cafe near both does great milkshakes and roast their own coffee. The city gates magnificent in local sandstone were constructed by henry VIII and now they have knocked down the council monstrosity look great next to a great railway station. Steam engine still run on the beautiful settle to Carlisle railway. Tullie house museum exploring the roman heritage and Hadrian's wall, which runs through the city is good. Sadly the working roman well in the city is not accessible and new discovery of roman baths part excavated has been covered back up. Apparently they are one of the best archeological finds of recent times. Old guildhall museum where the city stocks now reside are worth a visit too. To my shame never been the Victorian spa, with fabulous tiles and architecture means you can have a steam room in another age Lots to discover near Carlisle too, so worth a visit.

make a day off it, settle to carlisle railway from leeds return is £26.50 each

Hi all, I read somewhere that the membership fee is also tax deductible. I am a higher rate tax payer, can someone please explain is this true ? And how much is the saving in tax bill ?

Just joined the cssc.co.uk from Zeberdys reply .Wow what a good deal that is less then 4 quid a month for me the missus and upto 6 kids to use English Scottish and Welsh heritage loads of other benefits as well . If you qualify it looks a very very good deal

I’ve never heard of this scheme but it sounds good. Anyone know any more about it?

Whist this is a good deal if you work in the public services sector ie education NHS or other civil service role local council you can join the CSSC Sports and Leisure Club for £4 a month this includes access to English heritage, Scottish and Welsh Heritage and Royal Palaces for two adults and children. Worth a look here. https://www.cssc.co.uk/membership/

Good price if you'll use the membership, if only going a couple of times a year there are better options for your wallet.

Yes, CSSC members can visit all English heritage sites free of charge with the family. We have gone to Stonehenge twice now this year no questions asked just show your membership card. This is just one of the benefits of membership, a free taste card, cheap cinema tickets and various organised trips at amazing prices are the main reasons I joined (I sound like one of their salesmen perhaps I should be on commission!)

https://www.cssc.co.uk/CSSC/assets/File/SiteListbyCountyCSSCFeb.pdf List of included sites

That's all very well, but ignores the fact that charities are meant to be set-up for a charitable purpose, but how does that work with the National Trust CEO receiving over £200K? Seems self-serving to me, and it bugs me that every NT magazine is asking for donations all the time. The National Trust would collapse without all the volunteers who run it, and the salaries of its board members sticks in my craw, so being able to reduce the membership fee by getting a Scottish, New Zealand or Gambian one, is all okay as far as I'm concerned.

Looks like you get Stonehenge included as well! :)

But is that for all English Heritage sites?
