Garmin Edge 530 at £195, 1030 Plus at £390, 830 at £262.49..
Only a £35 or so saving over other stores such as Halfords/Argos but still may be of interest.

And yes, you can try and use a phone instead but it's crap (trust me, I tried for 6 months).

I access the Garmin site through Totum (student discount) to get these prices. There may be other ways of getting the discount through the usual means (BlueLight, etc.).

The following link may get you to the garmin site for the deals (no guarantees!) - the link at the top of the deal takes you to the standard Garmin site.

Great deal, my Edge 530 arrived on Friday and it's an amazing piece of kit. 102 mile ride on the weekend and the battery meter was showing 80%. Wow. Thanks OP (edited)

You buy a decent battery phone obviously, mine uses Komoot, Trailforks and a device called ShredMate which records trail data also, all this all day hardly dents my battery. If it did I’d plug it into the bike battery in any case. Overall I get modern and more accurate tracking over an 8bit level interface. The only issue is damaging my iPhone or losing it but I just need to find a better way of securing it onto the frame instead of the bars....still working on that

No point debating this. All done before. Just gets very boring. If you don't want one of these, why bother trying to hijack the thread?

I use my Edge for road and MTB, it works pretty well. To my mind, over using a phone the advantage is:
    - Screen is readable and crisp clear in all light and weathers
    - As mentioned, battery, mostly in that I can leave it on the bike and just charge it once a week
    - Speed, can just switch it on, all sensors (speed, HRM, Varia radar) connect instantly and I can select a route and go
    - Less bulk on the handlebars, it's nice and compact so no chance of knocking it off, and the bars aren't cluttered (more important on a road bike)

It's brilliant and better than the karoo 1 so I would go for it. The karoo 2 is a lot more expensive perhaps not worth the difference once you're over the excitement of the nice screen.

Your love for Garmin is apparent but literally some don’t know any better, if you bothered to check you’d see someone dismissed phones due to battery which isn’t the case. Phone vs Garmin for nav is night and day....

If anyone wants to buy my Fenix 6 solar pm me, I’m selling that now too 😃

    - phone is higher resolution and brighter, which phone are you comparing …- phone is higher resolution and brighter, which phone are you comparing too?- battery lasts just fine, I can plug mine into my bike also, if I was really worried I could take a small battery pack also- speed, even apps like Komoot record speed automatically although I use a little £35 device that clips onto the wheel and it records far greater detail than any of the other Garmin sensors - I keep mine in the frame, if you’re doing proper mountain biking it’s likely your going to come off so why risk on barsOther- gps is laggy- you have to faff with gpx download/upload - you can’t edit/alter journeys easily if at all- everything you do comes from either a phone or pc first - it has no phone/4g connection For £200 you could buy a dedicated phone for this application with a huge battery and use that instead, get some sort of PAYG sim or something cheapI think if your road biking and riding in long straight lines it might be okay but I found it buggy and annoying at how basic it was, it can’t talk only beeps and the mapping software is just terrible. I do have a Garmin 6 pro solar watch but I don’t even take this with me anymore.I could I’d I wanted pair the phone app with a Bluetooth headset like aftershockz which is bone conductive and not even need to look at the phone for directions Best info I find from apps is the elevation data, knowing how much there is to go on a climb or what the descent is going to be like.I’d rather break £200 laggy 8bit gps than my phone ofc, but you have your phone with you ultimately anyway, so if I was super worried I’d stick it in the bag and use the headset instead and have no display as it would literally tell me turn left xyz The only thing Garmin has over phones is collision detection, that is useful but I could wear my watch however I never go without friends normally who also have collision detection

You don’t have to faff with gpx. This Garmin automatically syncs your rides and your routes with Strava when it finds your Wi-Fi, you don’t have to press a single button. The screen is always on for you entire ride. Not many phones will last for hours with the screen on permanently especially when they get older. Also you can wear any gloves you like as no touchscreen and you can switch screens etc without letting go of the handlebars if you have the remote - great for MTB. Does the phone tell you how long your jumps were and where you did them on a map?

Totally agree. This is the old one, much slower and not as power efficient and doesn’t have the MTB features, however it’s still a lot better than using your phone.

Seems most of them are on 3-5 week delivery now unfortunately - start of the cycle season probably.
Next best option for a quick delivery would be Amazon+£5 back on the Amex card (£235) or Halfords with the 10% discount from student Totem or British Cycling (free membership at the moment) -(£234).
