Need a smart meter. Three appointments to have one installed. Twice, they never turned up, once turned up but couldn't do it because it was dark outside and couldn't see the meter
    mousegreatest's avatar
You should have got £50 for each time they didn’t turn up. Request it now.

For comparison with British Gas, and as info for people thinking to swap, I did, wait for it........A SPREADSHEET !
The Government protection (EPG) came into power on 01 October 2022. During the whole time of its implementation, tracker would only have had to be subsidised for 22 days. These days are in green on the sheet, with the protected rate of the day inserted.
The EPG rates and dates are to the right. To be noted, this sheet is for the Southern area only, but generally the country varied by fractions of 1p, so it is as good as correct for you.
The method used was.....I gathered the EPG data from the Gov website gov.uk/gov…tes. I collected the daily data from Nordpool, processing the GBP data with the equation (((Daily rate x 11.845%)+7.336)+5%) This includes their profit and VAT. So the figures on the main sheet are all VAT inc, and the actual price paid by us, the end consumer.
For those who cannot be bothered, the take out is that over the 14 months of data, the daily rate of Tracker has averaged to 27.62p per KWH., with the lowest rate being 13.55p per KWH. August & September of 2022 were the most expensive.
50478852-dLahi.jpgWith the general rate of 34p ish per KWH across the networks, and with a small home expected to use 1800 KWH per year, Tracker would have saved around £126 over the year. (1800 x 7p) (edited)

Is there a best price on energy at the moment or is it all just the capped rate? I'm with Scottish power and don't get any perks or anything, just a monthly bill for £300
    tubster76's avatar
Move to octopus. Then ask to be put on tracker (you need smart meter) PM me if you need detailed guidance but 40 per cent saving on capped rate atm.
  5. TristanDeCoonha's avatar
Still doesn't come down to the full time Octopus Tracker rate

British Gas is probably the worst company. It's been seven months since our house move and they still haven't been able to close my account. They migrated their internal IT systems a few months ago and it was a monumental screw up.
  6. Billy_B123's avatar
Last time they did this, they actually took money from my account as i wasnt home and didnt use any 😳

Billion pound profits and that’s all they can muster. Not only is it derisory, it’s embarrassing.
  9. CyptoHippy's avatar
I am on Octopus Tracker rate nothing can beat this in whole market place at the moment? Been on it since January 2023 saved a fortune.
    joolsvern72's avatar
I just had a look, their "new" prices from 1st July are the exact same as BGas, the only difference is 3p a day cheaper on standing charges (in total). I'm not really willing to go through a change of supplier for £10 a year.

Not a BGas fan here, didn't use them for for as long as I can remember until I moved house and was no point changing supplier when they all charge the same.
  10. samfooty's avatar
    This is horrendous.
  11. TristanDeCoonha's avatar
Well it's Sunday tomorrow, and Octopus will be charging 15.21p inc vat per kwh in the Southern region. So even with the generosity of BG, their clients are still losing out
    SR4's avatar
    "generosity"

With octopus agile, price for eastern England won't go above 4.4p between 9am-3:30pm
  12. smithyg's avatar
    Great for charging my EV
  13. Bouncypete's avatar
Surely if you've got a smart meter then Octopus Agile will work out cheaper than this deal over the course of a week.
    tubster76's avatar
Once you move to octopus you might want to ask to be put on the tracker waiting list if you have more regular use.
  14. thepostie's avatar
How can you live life like this! Just use electric when you want and stop thinking about it.
    TristanDeCoonha's avatar
I decide after looking at Nordpool whether or not the laundry gets done today or tomorrow.
That glorious feeling of "Sticking it to the man" and depriving them of their profits. That was probably another 5p saved today!
  15. Iain1775's avatar
How has this got over 800, it’s embarrassing they are not even giving back a portion of the current wholesale electricity price.
I’ve been paying between 14-18p / kWh for best part of a year on Octopus Tracker, and that’s 24-7 not just a few hours on a Sunday
Bit cynical launching this just as the price cap is set to fall, bet they tie you in to an expensive rate just to offer a few hours of ‘savings’
    Chamaeleon's avatar
    From octopus:

[In Winter '22-'23, a typical household on Agile paid around 35p/kWh on average (a little more than the average variable tariff).

Agile prices can spike up to 100p/kWh any time – that's three times higher than most customers are paying right now.

This tariff is best suited to customers who can shift large amounts of their energy use to avoid these expensive peaks, often by using smart home technologies like solar and batteries.]

    Not for everyone then!

With British Gas. Smart meter has been faulty now for 12mths.

Need to move away from this company!
    TristanDeCoonha's avatar
You will still have the same faulty meter.
Get them to replace it while a customer, then you will have accurate figures on which to base your argument, and to make it easier for the Ombudsman
  17. TylerTurnon's avatar
I was expecting my quarterly bill/statement from BG yesterday. I suspect it is delayed for this further cash grab….waiting for the1st July reduction to jump ship to octopus
    TristanDeCoonha's avatar
Why wait, unless you are contracted?
Jump ship now, register your interest for Tracker, your change over should occur within 3 working days, and hopefully your account will be converted to Tracker as soon as it is live.
If Tracker is either not available or suitable, look at the other tariffs. Especially if you charge your car at night.
Don't forget to find someone who can give you their referral so that you can both get you £50 bonus. It would be a shame to waste the free money.
  18. DaveGoesShopping's avatar
Several years ago, I signed up to a British Gas deal, leaving another supplier. Six months later, I noticed I was paying too much. After I had signed up, but before I transferred over, they had increased the tariff rates in that deal a lot but hadn't bothered to tell me. When I complained, they said it was my fault for not noticing the increased per KWh rates hidden in the paperwork (without any indication that this had increased). Very sharp practice. Needless to say, I left them as soon as I could vowing never to return.
  19. TristanDeCoonha's avatar
British Gas offering half price tomorrow, and making a song and dance over it, but the industry cost, according to Nordpool, is only 20% of today's rate, and that itself is lower than the standard tariff.
Tracker customers can expect charges around 8.71p for electricity tomorrow
    A57ton's avatar
Basically free or they are paying me until 4pm

    Even worse. This is insulting.

Just a sneaky way to encourage people to get a smart meter, nothing more!
    bev's avatar
Exactly right, so they can control you.
  24. johnszi23's avatar
Every Sunday 11-16, how generous. People most likely will be outdoor, and what electricity used that time anyway? The fridge?
    AndrewMS3's avatar
Buy one of those powerfull, what i call hair dryers, that can set your BBQ coal alight within seconds. No need to wait ages for them to gradually start up with firelighters, etc
  25. Gazebonic's avatar
Octopus just offered me a fixed deal for £78 per month, tempted
    enclavemarine's avatar
50437875-6bjpE.jpgConsidering tracker rates have been floating around this for quite some time now i wouldn't be quick to fix as the lower prices should start filtering through to regular tariffs soon

British Gas are a joke charged me nearly 1200 for April and may. Argued with then after 4 weeks of ringing up admitted they were wrong£ 20 in compensation. Worse company going
    thewolf8u's avatar
And this is why I always use a separate bank account for my energy bills with no overdraft facility so they can NEVER take more than is correct.

Been on a waiting list for British gas to send us a smart meter since moving to them when last company went bust. Must be nearly two years ago now. They are terrible! (edited)
    TristanDeCoonha's avatar
Jump to Octopus. Not only could you save money, but their customer service is great.
When I signed up my father, I ordered new meters, which were fitted within 4 weeks. I am in the process of ordering meters now for my friend so that he can join Tracker
  33. Alfanje's avatar
Don’t be fooled by them. This is the same company that broke into people’s homes and forcefully fit pre-paid meters for those who couldn’t afford their DDs any longer (effectively stopping their electricity supply unless they could “front” the money to top up their meter). They only stopped doing this at the end of last year after much negative publicity.

Stay away from them. You’ve seen how their CEO decided to behave when millions of us needed their help. Instead he preferred to increase profits and took home a massive bonus too. Octopus on the other hand showed not all corporations need to be ruthless. They tried to keep their prices as low as possible and passed on the savings to their customers as soon as the energy started dropping again. Nobody else did that.
    ellietoo's avatar
They recently sent my elderly and always in credit in laws an email suggesting a prepayment meter might be a good idea for them. I thought that was disgusting.

You did right. It's worth coppers but sounds good in their literature. Pretty obvious only for people with a smart meter. I don't qualify but it seems to me they're extracting the Michael. Blooming marvellous how utilities are coming down in the summer, truly, you couldn't make it up
  37. adrianooo's avatar
So it is possible to offer some cheaper electricity but same as fuel prices it's just a pure greed
    A2019's avatar
Prices go up in winter due to demand, and the opposite happens in the summer time which means prices go down. Blame thatcher for privatising the industry.
  38. Dusty's avatar
Ah, trying to get people to take up so called smart meters. Don't do it peeps!
    deanjohnson666's avatar
Sadly some people are dumb as a box of frogs and fall for the propaganda, it’s not very smart to get a smart meter.

This is the equivalent of being robbed at gun point every day for 20 years then being told one day "actually! I'll only rob half of what i usually take today!"

    British Gas. My man....
