Have been using safety razors for about 7 years now and I wouldn't go back. I get a better, closer shave with it than I can with any cartridge razor, and it probably only takes me a few more minutes than it would using a cartridge. A years worth of shaving costs me about £15 in razors - I use Feather razors which are more expensive than other brands, but sharper.
Don't listen to all the people with their crazy shaving routines either. If you want to make an event of it then more power to you, but I just literally splash some water on my face, apply the cheapest canned shaving cream and then get to it. It's absolutely fine cutting corners unless you have really sensitive skin or very coarse stubble.
