Only a basic scanner, cheaper versions available that do the same

Plugged a cheap one in and blew the cluster fuse

The problem is that the OBD port usually has a constant power feed, so ignition doesn't have to be on and as soon as something is plugged in it gives power to it.
So as you found out some cheapo Chinese ones can blow a fuse, mind you even decent ones can.

Are these any better than the OBD Bluetooth dongles and an app on your phone?
    warmasice's avatar
It depends on the app you're using. Infocar app is really good. Better than the Torque app

Neighbourhoods should all chip in and share a very decent scanner - they can save thousands of pounds for a community.

Maybe a defibrillator would be a better investment? I've always thought this and bought one for my street as a present to anyone who would ever need it.

Any ideas if this would tell me what’s wrong with ABS light on!? Just want to know what sensor I need to replace! On a focus.

Brake pedal switch. Very cheap replacement, simple push and twist fitment like a bayonet light bulb

    Link?

Can anyone confirm this actual removes fault lights etc?
    deanos's avatar
Will only clear a engine management light , won't clear air bag for example, you need a more powerful one that goes deeper in the ECU (edited)

Amazon states it is not compatible with my BMW I3.

    Strange it has OBD2.

    ANY IDEAS WHY?😁
    fahed2000's avatar
Perhaps it is because it doesn't have an engine . I have heard that the chip version / or odb version v1.5 supports the full instruction set however the 2.0/2.1 versions are cheaper versions which only inc the used commands and instruction set used by ICE cars.

Just a bog standard rebranded OBD2 scanner from China. Might as well get a Bluetooth one for half than that.

No need to get a Bluetooth version persay, they can be a PIA to connect PLUS require 3rd party software if a cheap version. More pro Bluetooth versions lock you behind a paywall in their apps to get functionality. Wired versions work great, just no need to spend this much. £10 version will do most folks to get basic reading.

Nothing a £3 dongle wouldn't do... Also the software would be more up to date.
  11. standforit_'s avatar
Useless. U need minimum so it clears airbag light n to service rear electric brakes. This is the same as downloading free software with a £3 dongle

Does this only work with certain cars?
    Funkyboy's avatar
No all cars with obd11 (that's every car from last 30 years) good for basic code reading
  13. bodley59's avatar
Most are not compatible with Fiat alfa cars
    GST11's avatar
I used a £5 one on my Alfa for years, no issues

Can this tell when a DPF has last regenerated or if a dpf sensor is working?
