After AMDs announcements yesterday, and their current equivalents, there is still no clear budget card king. At this point, I do not see prices of the 3060 dropping much more before being discontinued entirely. AMD not giving Nvidia reason to do so does not help.

To me, the 192-bit bus and 12GB is a must over the 128-bit 8GB AMD 6600 cards.

Do NOT buy any GPU now- wait for the handful of days til the 7800XT and 7700XT hit. GPU prices are about to see a major adjustment downward.

This always happens in high-tech. Price hike bubbles burst, and historically GPU prices have never been so out of wack with BOM and demand (ignoring the synthetic mining panic).

You know full well that the price of this card will not lower. Those two cards unveiled yesterday are way overpriced, and will not affect Nvidia. Who, I must add, are also overpriced, but at least more future-proof with the newly announced DLSS 3.5 announced yesterday which will work with this card.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade for my son's PC that currently has a GeForce RTX 2060?
He'll be wanting to play Starfield soon.
    Thanks.

It's definitely better than the 2060, and has double the amount of memory, but is an Increase of 20-25 FPS on average worth the price to you. If he is playing on a 1080p monitor, he will more than likely be able to achieve 60fps with settings turned down, depending on his CPU, too. According to early reviews, the engine hasn't actually been pushed that much since Fallout 4, and the original recommended specs should be ignored, as you even have 4GB GTX 960s running the game at 1080p 60fps with lower settings. It's far more CPU bound than GPU.

Would this be better tha a 3060ti 8gb for VR for Quest 2 or pro?

For the extra VRAM requirements of VR, absolutely. The "weaker" 3060 outperforms the TI on newer games that require more VRAM. The memory on the TI is also slower.
