sorted byTop Sci-fi - My opinion
2001 A Space Odyssey - Absolute genius film making. My favourite film, so much about this film is truly incredible. Vastly and immensely ahead of its time. A timeless Sci-fi classic. Why watch imposters such as Interstellar, there is just no point.
Dark Star (1974)
Westworld (1973)
Logan's Run (1976)
The Andromeda Strain (1971)
Ex Machina (2015)
Silent Running (1972)
Star Wars original trilogy (1977 - 1983)
Rogue One (2016)
Solo (2018)
Alien (1979)
Aliens (1986) - Great sequel but very different from Alien
Terminator 2 (1991) - Another great sequel and this is probably the ultimate sequel, this is better than Terminator (1984).
Stalker (1979)
Blade Runner (1982)
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Planet of the Apes (1968) - The absolute greatest ending to any film ever.
I like Guardians of the Galaxy, although not seen the 3rd film yet.
Alien, Terminator and Star Wars are all examples of where less is more, all these franchasis are massively damaged by later films in the series. All Star Wars films for example from 1999 are pretty much awful. Except for the exceptional Rogue One and the underappreciated Solo.
There's more I will have forgotten anyway in terms of Sci-fi TV series. Altered Carbon was brilliant, the first season unmatched. Westworld Season 1 was awesome but lost its way. I did like Series 3 where it branched out in to futuristic society that was cool. Season 4 I haven't watched. The Last of Us TV series although is that Sci-fi? More dystopian / pandemic.
Sci-fi I definitely don't like >
The Fifth Element (1997)
Inception (2010)
The Matrix series of films. The Matrix (1999) is watchable the rest are dire mediocre psychobabble nonsense.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Interstellar (2014) << 2014? Wow ok time does fly
Moon (2009) - This is 100% Dulux actually trade paint, watching this is like watching paint dry. Now people say 2001: A Space Odyssey is dull/boring, nope 2001 does it properly, does it exceptionally and is rewatchable to infinity. Moon is space potatoes boring with a capital *yawn*
I haven't even mentioned animated sci-fi. Akira (1987), Ghost in the Shell (1995), Battle of the Planets (1979) although the original Gatchaman (1972) is supposed to be better and I should watch that instead, as Battle of the Planets is hugely edited rehashed Gatchaman for a luke warm kiddy Western audience.
I love Sci-fi some people may think I actually hate it due to some perceived classics I've stated I dislike. No Sci-fi is safe in my hands. There's other Sci-fi that I like such as Saturn 3 but they don't make it on the list because they are a bit cheeseballs guilty pleasure, it is generally creepy at times though.
Anyway I'm certain I could written fewer or no words and the world would be just fine and dandy. So call me crazy I rate Oblivion higher than Interstellar. I like Sci-fi which is why I've written far too much on the subject here. Definitely not an authority on it but I like to think I am.
Yup knew I would forget one Pitch Black (2000) that's a good film. (edited)
watch it recently.
definitely underrated.
