I flew that airline once and it was the worst trip of my life. Seat is cramped and the food is inedible.

No probs with China Southern, actually the food was provided by a restaurant chain called South Beauty and it's quite good. Flight was fine, new planes, staff generally no issues.

Been eyeing this last week but curious about that there is a layover in China so do we need a visa or not and also do we need to do any test or fill out any forms for either China or vietnam as want to go for a week.

No visa required for China if you are in transit. Free 15 day Vietnam entry visa on arrival for U.K. passport holders.

Looks like you’ll need a Covid test for outbound and return as the plane is destined for China. That is the real bummer.

I did this exact route on China Southern via Guangzhou from Heathrow to Ho Chi Minh before COVID. Nowt wrong with China Southern. Nice modern planes. Economy is cramped, but hey that is economy. Guangzhou is a modern airport but soulless.

Hi Chi Minh is amazing. Cheap as chips and great pan-Asian food and rooftop bars. However in April/May it will be effing hot and humid. Best done in Jan and Feb when I did it. Weather was warm and comfortable.

Nice time of year to go to Hanoi which is much further north. (edited)

'From April 29, all international travelers entering China will only need to take an antigen self-test instead of a PCR-test.' -- looking better

Government website is a bit vague, but I guess transiting through China technically does mean entering China right? So tests will be needed

Transit in mainland China? I’d rather be dead in that situation. Next.

Say the wrong thing or wear a 'Taiwan is not part of China t-shirt' and I am sure it could be arranged.

Deal. I would definitely go back there and if you can, do. Probably not using this airline.

I flew with them to Thailand on 787 and honestly had no faults for the price, felt like flying Etihad just with different colour scheme inside, would fly again for sure

There were flights to Jakarta around 450 about a week ago, but not on the airlines website. Transit was 20+ hours so I went with another airline
