Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, is a large city known for ornate shrines and vibrant street life. The boat-filled Chao Phraya River feeds its network of canals, flowing past the Rattanakosin royal district, home to opulent Grand Palace and its sacred Wat Phra Kaew Temple. Nearby is Wat Pho Temple with an enormous reclining Buddha and, on the opposite shore, Wat Arun Temple with its steep steps and Khmer-style spire. ― Google

Note that on the Tuesdays in March, Qatar and Etihad prices also drop to around £540, still £60 more than the main deal price, but worth considering.

Flying with Saudi is okay but Jeddah airport is like a bad dream.

Incorrect. Why is it a bad dream? I’ve been there multiple times and really good for a connection. Offcourse its not Dubai airport but its not even Emirates pricing. You get food, theres a hotel and you can even get a transit visa for 96hours as you’re flying Saudi airline, which is for $10-15. Ignore this comment, definitely fly saudi.

No problem travelling by yourself, l generally do it all the time. Just need to do your prior homework and plan an itinerary which is going to suit you. Travelling solo for the first time you may feel it more comfortable to book all flights and accommodation before you go rather than as you are going along. As good planning is a key, l log everything in a simple spreadsheet, dates in the first column, then flight details, accommodation details, payment details and maybe comments in the next columns. Best to book the main long haul flights first having checked there is affordable accommodation available at your destination, then book your accommodation. Booking flights l use Google flights or Skyscanner, accommodate Trivago or Hotels.com. When searching for flight deals, use a comparison site, and l find it’s then best to book direct with the airline, as if the airline have to cancel or change a flight, it’s far easier to deal with the airline directly than an a third party agent like lastminute.com, even if the flight was maybe £20-£30 more expensive direct with the airline. I speak from experience, if a flights cancelled it can take months and lots of stress to get a refund from a third party agent. Generally all big airline will look after you. Finally, getting from the airport to your accommodation, if taking a taxi agree a fee first, and if possible try to select flights which arrive during the daylight rather than late at night. If you need to change planes ideally make sure you have about 2 hours minimum transfer time between flights so you are not rushing.

I find a Trello board great for planning site visits, as you can use the map then to quickly see what is near each other.

Note this offer is with: flightcatchers.com not direct from Saudia Airlines website.
therefore you must read ticket policy from flightcatchers not from the airline website, also the credit card protection doesn't work when you buy a product/service from a third party.

Booking with saudi will be around £40-50 extra maybe cheap or maybe nothing extra. Almost same case with all airlines. I recommend booking directly with the airline.

If a solo traveller was to do something like this for the 1st time how do you go about planning & booking then hotels/stays for the period. Also visiting the sites etc... I presume trip advisor is a good place to start. Not ventured out of this country so any help much appreciated.
If going solo isnt a good option can you find a site to maybe find like minded people also visiting the country. Places i'd love to visit are the gardens, the swim in the sea with fish ... and obviously the elephant sanctuary, shrines etc...

Nothing wrong with solo travel. I've been solo travelling since I was 16 and never stopped since. For flights, id recommend google flights and sky scanner since the have an option to check flight prices leaving to and from multiple days so you can always look for cheaper deals. Hotels I personally use booking and airbnb. As for planning google is your friend. You can always look up for example bangkok 5 day itinerary and get a list of things to do. If youre looking for specific advice reddit is a great help. Try looking up solo travel bangkok reddit and read through other people's advice etc. If you're happy to be social during your travels, staying in hostels is a great option to meet other solo travellers too.

I’d love to go back to Thailand. It has so much to offer!!  I haven’t been for several years now. I stayed in the baiyoke sky hotel in Bangkok. They have the BEST breakfast in the world. Food from all over the world. I destroyed the dim sum section! mmmmmm!
not a fan of the city because of the pollution still beautiful though!

    haa0518's avatar
Absolutely. Go for it and you will not regret it. Saudi is really good.

Let us know what it was like, If staying in Bangkok I REALLY recommend staying in the baiyoke sky hotel as in my previous post just for breakfast, You can fill up for the day. lol Also very good opportunity of a free upgrade. Everyone I know apart from 1 person has had it. Not sure, but it still maybe the tallest hotel in the city and is breath taking. Have a nice time.

I just don’t get the mind set of people who would not fly with an airline that does not serve alcohol on a long distance flight. You do not need alcohol to “pass the time” nor do you need to get rat-arsed before you can class any experience as “having a great time”.
Alcohol in excess eventually dehydrates you which is NOT a good idea as mostly, you will be getting off at the other end into intense heat and different time zones.
Have a little sense and do your body a favour by planning ahead. Pack a small plastic container with decaff coffee granules or decaff tea in your hand luggage, cabin crew will happily make you a hot drink with it if they don’t have decaff on board. Also have a couple of bottles of Lucozade Sport in your bag to alternate with water so you don’t lose all the sodium in your system. Bottled water you can get before boarding or ask the cabin crew for it.
There will be plenty time to drink alcohol to your heart’s content when your are in your resort hotel. Travel safely and responsibly - It’s not just your body that will appreciate it, so will the crew and your fellow passengers (edited)

I don't agree with your logic. It's about freedom of choice.

Saudi Arabia has recognised that Saudia aren't up to the job and are launching Riyadh Air to compete with Qatar, Ehiad and Emirates - it won't be a dry airline.

They'll probably keep Saudia in reduced role for religious traffic etc. (edited)

Thailand starts sweltering in March and by the end of the month is uncomfortable. That is one reason why it is so cheap.

Pay the extra and go January and early February when the cool monsoon winds from the north blow.
    tomaszr's avatar
The Thai Mango season starts though and they are the reason alone to go in March.

Anyone recommend a nice family beach  resort in Thailand for first time visitors?
I hate long flights so puts me off but always wanted to try Thailand but no idea on which resorts are best for families

    Kata or Karon beach Phuket

I think I've flown on this carrier, from Dammam to Dubai a few years ago?

It was fairly basic but got me there and back on time and that's the main thing.

Sounds like a great price, for a fairly long haul flight.

I was in Bangkok last October and really didn't recognise the place at all! It's changed so much since that stag party in 2000! (edited)

We literally just travelled on Saudia yesterday, and they didn't transfer any bags from the London flight to our onward flight. So we had around 40-50 families and around 200 bags that never made it onto the onward flight.

To say it was mismanaged from the start (LHR) would be an understatement. They first started checking in for two flights on the same counters simultaneously, when the 2nd flight was at least an hour later than the first one. It's like they don't care. The flight itself was alright but I wouldn't go anywhere near this airline ever again. It's like everything else with Saudi these days, just throw money at the issue and see if everything falls in place.

Does anyone fly direct. My daughters is going next year and dont know if she should stop or fly direct.
    anewkillerstar's avatar
Yes, Eva Air do. We flew to Bangkok direct from Heathrow this summer. Great airline.

Good price, I am looking for middle jan for 15 nights, no fixed dates and I can't find anything this cheap without a massive layover which I don't want.

Youd have to be nuts to choose to fly on saudia to save £60. No alcohol on board and the airport is more like Stansted than Doha.
    gtd65's avatar
Doha is a pretty high benchmark to be fair.

I was in business class from Edinburgh to Saigon, via Doha (on Qatar) and made full use of the facilities!
