If you're a first timer, and might, understandably find some things too complicated. I'd recommend going on either MSC or P&O cruises. Everything is included on those ones, other than drinks packages, which can be bought when booking

    Burgmeister
Or, at least for P&O (not yet been on MSC) just buy your drinks as you go. Even easier to understand!
P&O drinks package is, in my opinion, a poor choice. PAYG is usually the better option on P&O
    YMMV

    Bit messed up post here.
The Star is doing round Ireland 11th and 21st May.
31st May is a Norway cruise.

Free at sea is £199 but some agents are discounting that.

    Seascanner is not always cheapest

The round Britain are Norwegian Dawn
    14th 24th May

    Grats/service on 10n £155pp (edited)

It is better for a couple to get 2 cabins when NCL have zero supliment.

You both get the shore ex credit is done as 2pax only one gets it.

I don't understand any of this, what is free at sea
    First time cruise for me,

"Free at sea" is the NCL add on for discounted drinks, a meal and some shore excursion credit on this overpriced tours.

Each cruise line does their own thing start researching.

For 2A+2C, plus at sea package (not sure how it would work for the kids):

    inside =. £1491
    outside = £1639

Not sure about the route, otherwise would be tempted to tell the school they have the (they don’t want em until 48hrs after last drop).

Free at sea is for first 2 pax in a cabin.

Go to NCL.com and read up how that cruise line does things.

Is smoking banned on cruises everywhere
    getmore4less's avatar
    getmore4less
    No.

Most have multiple outside areas where cigarette and vaping is allowed
Many have a smoking room for cigars

    Some still have smoking casino.

Most have banned on balconies after a big fire on a Princess ship

A better description would be "An Irish Round Trip".

All the same, if I had the time off to spare I'd love to do something like this! What a cracking deal!

Just booked my first cruise and it's unbelievable how many extras/fees there are.
    Burgmeister's avatar
    Burgmeister
Depends which cruise line you booked with. Which extras and fees are you having to pay?
If you book P&O then the only extras that you really need to pay are for your alcoholic drinks in the bars. Of course, if you decide to go on any trips then that would obviously incur a charge but you don't have to do any of those

Really good price for a solo cruiser.
Presumably you can still book the "free at sea" package with these fares?

We get everything we can upfront aiming for zero spend on board.
MSC have been coming out at £500pppw unless we go Yacht club

Our next NCL is around £650pppw

    Rare we go over £100pppd.

Travel insurance world wide continuous cover and vehicle breakdown <£15 month for 2 people and we can travel independent of each other.

This 10n base £400 free at sea £200, grats £155 and 2 extra special dinner £70

Total £825 for 10n less than £600pppw and can do the cruise with zero spends on board. (edited)

My usual cut off is £100pppn too.
We have paid very slightly more for our upcoming P&O cruise (£105) but it came with £530 onboard credit - so I figured that I could go over my usual limit

May be silly question, but are non alcohol drinks free with booking of are any\all drinks chargeable.?

The only time that we have sailed with NCL we had a drinks package so it doesn't really stick in my mind what was available. My best guess, based on various cruises, would be that tea and coffee will be available FOC as will water. Some cruise lines include juice whilst others restrict this to mealtimes (mainly breakfast).

Warning NCL drinks package is ok for alcohol but does not include bottled water.

It's not the best arou d but is relatively cheap with the free at sea package which includes at least 1 speciality meal.

I'm pretty sure all cruise lines will give you free watet rather than have their passengers dies from dehydration..

Do you have to pay gratuities or acceptable to be a cheap skate and not? Rather just tip if I have exceptional service anywhere (which I probably won't as its buffet restaurants? and maybe tip the bar a few times)

I did a quick google and read some mixed feedback on forums that it's a con and the crew are paid fixed salaries, by tipping you are just reducing the amount the cruise line has to contribute to those salaries. Never cruised, don't know the industry?

Opt out the so called Service and just tip the good service you get onboard.

    With Norwegian save even more.
American Express card holders have a deal, spend £750 get £200 back but you have to book direct. Prices very similar.
also you can buy “Cruisenext” vouchers on EBay will save you money, I do.
I always pay extra for the Premium Drinks package and drink Top shelf Whisky Run and Tequila and champagne with dinner. Free water and Starbucks.

If one operator said this is the total price it includes everything, wouldn't that encourage more new people to try a cruise?

    Marella (tui).
There will always be optional extras of course. Like cabin choice/grade, upgraded drinks package, payable speciality restaurants and trips.

Hi - never been on a cruise - have heard you can sometimes sit a day / overnight in a ship while it is in a port before commencing another cruise- anybody gave any experience of this or links please
    getmore4less's avatar
    getmore4less
If you book 2 convective cruises that's know as Back to Back(B2B).

Depending on cruise line/location and cabin you may be able to stay on during changeover day.

Some cruises may have more than one day in the changeover port and embark/disembark over 2 days.

Marella and P&O are two examples that do this on some cruises.

Many employers offer travel insurance through their salary sacrifice scheme. For me, this works out at £82 per year for world wide, with cruise and winter sports included. It covers the entire family including my 23 and 20 years old children. Plus we can all travel independently, even at the same time.

WARNING. Cruises from UK with NCL.

NCL has an issue with some ports where they can't serve alcohol even if you have the package.

2 ships effected STAR and DAWN
Full list of ports this happens is not yet known as still on first itinerary.

Eg Leaving Southampton no alcohol till late evening Star was 9pm.
