I've heard terrible things about lag on this thing

No lag for me had since release. Granted only ever used in the house mind but worked in every room.. mostly used on the toilet

I'm looking at getting one of these, just love the idea of a true dual sense experience on a portable. Nice screen size too, still compact but just a touch bigger than Switch/Steam Deck to hopefully make the jump to 1080p noticeable.

Do think they missed a trick with no support for PS plus streaming direct from cloud so it isn't a door stop without a PS5 to link it to.

RE lag, I've watched quite a few reviews of it and the two main things to avoid lag seem to be connecting the PS5 via ethernet to router so only the connection between router and portal is wireless and setting the portal to only use 5ghz WiFi (think it is on auto by default) as 2.4ghz is slower and typically very crowded as most devices default to it (especially security and smart home things).

My PS5 is actually in my log cabin in the garden, but it's connected by ethernet cable to a powerline adaptor. The PS Portal connects to the 5gHz WiFi provided by another powerline adaptor in the house, so I'm not even close to the router, but everything seems fine.

This coupled with a strong WiFi home network and correct settings is brilliant. Very minimal lag and an absolute pleasure to play when the TV is occupied.

I've used this waaaay more than I thought I would. Being able to just sit on the sofa with the Mrs and play Final Fantasy has been brilliant. Also being able to have it when u have 20 mins waiting for dinner to cook or something has been ideal. I went from slating it (before I had it) to loving it.

Surely any lag would be down to the WiFi signal. Received mine from EE Store yesterday and I've not noticed any lag playing Spiderman 2.

It's more than just WiFi. When playing remote play on the phone, 3rd party apps are better & less lag than PlayStation's official remote play app.

This paired with the Pulse Explore have been so good for my needs that it’s made my gaming laptop redundant. Hardly get use of my main TV so can fire this up and play on the sofa, in bed or away from the house (not tried yet). I sold my Steam Deck due to screen size being too small however the portal size is more useable for open world games.

I don’t get any lag but that’s probably helped by the fact my PS5 is wired to an ASUS gaming router (set to gaming profile) and the Portal connected to 5Ghz WiFi (also gaming profile).

Don’t get a lot of time to game but the portal has made it easy to squeeze in an hour each evening. Highly recommend providing you have a decent router

Xbox cloud is the way To go if you don’t play title games.

I have one ps5 in my living room, one in my cinema room and one in my home office all connected to 4k screens. I dont need this but for some reason want to buy one. (I already have a switch as well). (edited)

    Maybe you do, but why...

Why don't you upgrade to an Xbox series X ...

I play hogwarts legacy on mine and have had no lags

Anyone had any joy using it outside connected to your phone?

I've seen videos of people doing it, not tried it myself.

I had a ps5 normal and had literally no lags, got a ps5 slim and suddenly started getting lags.

I wired my internet connection to the ps5 and seems to have helped.

There is lag on any remote play device. You only have to look at tests people have done and even Digital Foundry.

Hold the PS Portal next to your TV running a game with a timer on such as Gran Turismo 7, and you will see roughly a 60ms difference in the time on the screen to what is on the TV.

I've used remote play using different devices and both the unofficial and official app and have seen both report the same 60ms in my own home on 1GB Fibre.

I've used remote play at work where we have 100Mb connection and I've managed to play Spider Man Remastered and Miles Morales both on Ultimate difficuty and do ok, no perceived lag but occasional hiccups with the picture breaking up.

I'm soo tempted even though chiaki works perfectly on the Steam Deck. I'm loving progressing in the story on FF7: Rebirth on the TV and then when it's in use just loading up the Deck and taking care of side missions. I just like that this is a dedicated device, would be nice to have the haptics as well.

Great I keep missing out on the other EE deals and managed to get one! Plus hopefully TCB too

Bought this a week ago for 200, there’s definitely noticeable frame dips and lower res than on tv but still very playable, bought this and will be returning other, thanks op.

I mean i want it, purely for novelty much like the backbone controller I have and never use, honestly though is there much point to this if you have a compatible decent phone with backbone

What's the current state of PS5 Remote Play using a 3rd Party Controller on Windows?

I have Windows on my SteamDeck. First, I used the official app...it was perfect. Great sound. No lag. No artefacts. But then Sony decided to ban 3rd party controllers? ie the SteamDeck controls.

I switched to Chiaki. This works great for video and lag. No problems. But the sound is so bad, it crackles and pops. I've googled fixes, but nothing works. But at least I can use the SteamDeck controls using it.

Is there anything better out there?
