Does a road helmet make much difference compared to a mountain bike helmet? Are there any differences?

I'm usually a mountain bike rider so my helmet is covered in mud, cow **** etc.

I don't ride my road bike much but have pulled it out recently as I have a triathlon soon but wasn't sure I need to get another helmet.

Maybe I'll go the whole hog and get a TT aero one

They don’t really make a huge difference protection wise. Generally a mips road helmet is going to offer you slightly better protection if anything. Jury is stil out on the testing methods reflecting real life situations though.

The real downside though, is they often don’t come with visors, and have larger vents etc, so you’re going to end up with a slightly muddier head. (edited)

Maybe I'm missing something fashion wise, but I don't really understand the point of buying a helmet that isn't in a high viz colour. Seems the perfect item to make highly visible.

Well I can vouch for the fact this helmet will protect your head! I'm on my second after a momentary lapse of concentration saw me clipping a curb and hitting the deck hard. My head bounced off the concrete. Somehow I managed to cycle 15 minutes the rest of the way home (not advisable when you're concussed). Most disturbing thing the next day was having no memory of what I did for the rest of the evening when I got home after the fall

The next day I checked the helmet and the foam was cracked all the way from the front to the back so the impact was clearly well dissipated. Whether the MIPS did it's thing or not I can't say, but at least I'm still here and able to type (edited)

The MIPS system is a low-friction layer that allows a sliding motion of 10 to 15mm in all directions. I got sand coloured version 2 weeks ago. Its very narrow, so dont go by head circumference. Size up.

also although very comfy, i dont like the look very bulky, i suppose its compromise to afford intact head.
