Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival. The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.

As founders of a fledgling resistance, you’ve continued your clandestine scientific activity—performing critical research, and building invaluable tools for the few humans brave enough to defy the Combine.

Every day, you learn more about your enemy, and every day you work toward finding a weakness.

ABOUT GAMEPLAY IN VR:

Valve’s return to the Half-Life universe that started it all was built from the ground up for virtual reality. VR was built to enable the gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life.

Immerse yourself in deep environmental interactions, puzzle solving, world exploration, and visceral combat.

Lean to aim around a broken wall and under a Barnacle to make an impossible shot. Rummage through shelves to find a healing syringe and some shotgun shells. Manipulate tools to hack alien interfaces. Toss a bottle through a window to distract an enemy. Rip a Headcrab off your face and throw it out the window.

COMMUNITY-BUILT ENVIRONMENTS

A set of Source 2 tools for building new levels is included with the game, enabling any player to build and contribute new environments for the community to enjoy through Half-Life: Alyx's Steam Workshop. Hammer, Valve’s level authoring tool, has been updated with all of the game's virtual reality gameplay tools and components.

I highly recommend if you get this game once you complete it, to open up a whole new world of gameplay by going to Workshop in Steam and subscribing to Gunman Contracts and Levitation (Part 1) to (Part 5) which are Half Life: Alyx mods.

Surely that is robbing yourself of the experience? I have no intention of doing a play through of this until I’ve tried it at least once with VR.

On the VR hardware, what is the best unit to go for? Im looking at Steams offering but talk of new model is delaying me in making a purchase. Any VR enthusiast help would be appreciated

Been in the vr scene for about 5 years here's my opinion if it means anything

If you dont wanna read all this then in short Quest 2 is good and will do everything you want for a good price also works on pc. Valve Index is REALLY good and will do everything you want and more for a hefty price but its definitely worth it if you plan on sinking your teeth deep into vr.

Best entry level vr headset is a Quest 2, its a great piece of hardware for the price and not even just for beginners, it's pcvr compatible, the portability is a game changer and the battery is pretty good at 2-3 hours which might sound like not a lot until you play 3 hours.
Great display that actually beats the Valve Index's resolution, 120hz, decent tracking but it's been a bit janky at some times for me, the speakers are good and get the job done. I've experienced the plastic part on the head strap can get really uncomfortable and dug into my head which gets pretty painful after like 30 minutes of use.

Valve Index is probably the best pcvr kit, for about £550-£600 second hand you get 2 base stations that have incredible tracking, the Index's finger tracking controllers which are by far the best controllers for vr and the Valve Index headset which was the best for a very long time however now has some competitors (which do get very expensive) but this is more than enough. It has a great display, 144hz, 130° fov, amazing built in speakers that make the whole experience super immersive but the headset itself does get extremely hot. Steam is rumoured to be making a Valve Index 2 but no one knows when this will be, I expect it to be in about 2-3 years so getting an Index now isn't a bad idea at all.

Basic question but...what do I need to play this? Have an occulus quest 2 not being used (mostly lack of time) (edited)

You need a PC/Laptop capable of playing the game. Then you can wireless or wired play it through the Quest 2. Easily the most immersive game I've ever palyed.

3 years later and nothing still comes close.

There is still nothing better in VR. Outstanding value for money.

Even today it's still the only game really worth playing on VR. Nothing else comes close.

Great price and worth every penny and more. It’s still the definitive VR experience for me, and whilst that may not be a complement to the rest of the field, it shouldn’t stop you playing this. I thought I was way past games surprising me and making me feel like I was experiencing something brand new and exciting, but this did it. Absolute masterpiece.

This is a must have if you have vr system, especially a valve index. Easily top 3 vr games of all time and i dont see it moving from there any time soon.
    dudwood_fudwood's avatar
Interested to know what else is in that top 3.

    Cheapest way of playing this?

Getting a 2nd hand vr headset and then reselling when done?

I have a gaming pc with 3060ti if it helps

It is a bit more expensive than the Quest 2 route which i do believe would be the cheapest but if you plan on playing vr solely for Half Life Alyx I'd recommend looking for a second hand Valve Index (full kit) which go for around £550 on eBay then selling it after for the same price.

Half life Alyx was made to be played on the Valve Index and you can tell as they really make use of the Index's full finger tracking controllers in the games mechanics which you cant get with a Quest 2. I've played the game twice, once on the Valve Index and once on the Quest 2 and the Index is a huge game changer so I'd say it's worth spending the extra couple hundred to experience the game at its full potential, you'll end up getting the money back anyway

I bought this about 2 years ago but still need a new Graphics card to play it. Anyone tried with a 6650xt or similar? Want near ultra/high for a decent experience

Need to play this damn game!!!!
    chromarti's avatar
The game runs remarkably well on modest hardware, a 6650xt should be more than enough for a great experience. Surprisingly changing the graphics settings has very little effect on the visuals. I'd recommend giving it a try with the 6650xt - you have nothing to lose!
