Retailers are extending their return policies for Christmas: Full List of Shops Extending Returns Policies for Christmas

Each Certified Refurbished Steam Deck has been thoroughly tested to the same high standards as our retail units. Every device goes through a complete factory reset, software update, and an extensive examination involving over 100 tests at one of Valve's facilities. Among the tests are all controller inputs, the audio system, the screen, and internals. Battery health is also assessed to ensure proper functionality and longevity.

All refurbished units meet or even exceed the performance standards of new retail units. Although they may have minor cosmetic blemishes, they provide a reliable, high-quality gaming experience at a lower cost.

All Certified Refurbished Steam Decks include:

-The same one year warranty as a new Steam Deck (unless longer as determined by your country of residence)

-A refurbished power supply - fully tested (may have minor cosmetic marks)

-Carrying case and Quick Start guide

Think ill wait for one with a better screen amd better battery, 2hrs on certain games is a joke for a handheld (if your hands are king kongs mind you)
    Azurren's avatar
Sadly both of these are fairly unrealistic. The reason Valve opted for a 720p screen was to increase battery life and for better gameplay with the low system specs. Linus tech tips has a video on upgrading the screen on the steam deck / reviews on the steam decks competitors with better screens and the performance downgrade that accompanies them.

As for battery life it literally depends on what you play. Indi games like holo knight, Celeste, Stardew valley and crosscode can be played for 6-7+ hours whereas more demanding games (like outerwilds) can drain the battery in about 2.
Bigger battery = more weight and a bigger deck so that isn't going to happen anytime soon. A usb PD power bank offering 45w is a good option.

I know Steam have said there are no plans for a next gen model, but it can't be that far away. We are reaching the point now where new games are requiring certain GPU features that require extreme compromises.
Look at Alan Wake 2 - it seems to be a real faff getting it to run on a Steam Deck and then the recommended settings are 266p with FSR upscaling to 800p with most settings off or low.

I don’t think Alan Wake 2 is a great example. That’s tough to run on most desktops. If you can get games like Cyberpunk running well on a steam deck I think that’s a good indicator that the device is still quite capable

Tempted but knowing my luck they’ll reduce the brand new one in a sale.
    _sion's avatar
Autumn sale starts 21st Nov, its the big sale of the year so I'd expect the steamdeck to be reduced again. Stock won't last long so try and buy in the first couple of days, especially if you want the 64Gb

Just get the cheap one and replace the SSD with a phat one. Jimmy's your aunt

Great devices. Perfect pair up with the google stadia controller i had, all the buttons match. Can get them cheap.
I have the 64gb version with the intent of upgrading the SSD eventually. But games run perfectly fine from these memory cards (edited)
    dougster79's avatar
Your spot on there. Got the 64gb version myself recently and bought a decent quality 512gb SD card for about £23. Works great. No impact on in game performance. Probably only a very slightly longer loading time but nothing that noticeable compared to an SSD.
Biggest advantage of the deck is the portability, welcomed change away from the pc. Love the steam deck.

Can you play all steam games on it and do you need a laptop or PC. I don't own a pc or laptop now. Love playing silent hunter game and would love to be able to play this if posible
    guy_good's avatar
A lot of them work, even ones that are unverified. Sometimes they might require extra thinkering like changing control scheme etc., maybe they will work perfect out of box or might not run at all, because steam deck runs on linux and pc games get ran through kinda special compatibility mode. This site allows you to check if games run well on proton and if theres extra thinkering or they are plain unsupported.

My Deck has literally changed the way I game. I’m playing Starfield at ~25-30fps and around 25 hrs in I’m a total convert. What a stunning little device.

The screen on the Steam Deck is so unbelievably bad that I went back to the Switch OLED. Whats the point of high performance in a handheld when the poor quality display obstructs the enhanced fidelity? It's like buying a PS5 only to play on a £50 amazon basics monitor. (edited)
    Jimmy_Chou's avatar
I think this is a bit of a moot point, yes, clearly an OLED screen is better. I have been a big gamer for 30 plus years. I have the Deck, the kids have a Switch lite and the OLED version. The Deck screen is more than adequate for the purpose and in the new OS version there is even more control available.

As an example I bought the kids Mario Wonder and it's great, I have also emulated it on the Deck. I don't really enjoy it less because the screen is not as vivid. I find IPS panels perfectly adequate for 99% of situations. If you can't bring yourself to play something because of its not an OLED display then you really are missing out on a brilliant experience on the Deck. I in all honesty prefer this to playing the PS5.

    Waiting for 64

Altho I will be super excited to order soon. The dark souls trilogy handheld is something I can't ignore (edited)
    shibbrew's avatar
Elden Ring and Sekiro handheld can also not be ignored. Love my Steam Deck. Don't play on it enough but my PS5 gaming has been totally replaced by it. And this is a good price. Heat heat heat

    rrkjk's avatar
What?! This can be used with light gun gaming?! Does House of the Dead Overkill work?

Best value device in gaming right now
  20. Flying_Carrot's avatar
I bought this exact one a couple months ago last time on sale, like new, not a blemish on it.

Best purchase for years, playing games on it I normally wouldn't bother with on pc or laptop but for this form factor they just seem great.
  21. anttony's avatar
Love mine. Bought the 64 and put in a 1tb ssd. Dual boot with windows 11 and use Xbox gamepass, steam, epic, switch games etc. awesome
  22. alex3410's avatar
out of interest does anyone know the return % on these? it seems they crop up a fair bit on here.
    usernameTestingCaps's avatar
It's probably a bit high but in large part because their returns process was pretty straightforward. I bought one and thought it was really cool but also could tell I wasn't going to use it loads, I'd've probably kept it if there was the slightest hurdle to the returns process. Think I got to keep it for like 4 weeks?
  23. lifeforms's avatar
    Heat added,

Was holding fire to see if there was 10% off or similar for the steam sale end of November way, instead I've grabbed this instead. Was planning on purchasing the 64gb anyhoo, if no % off for sale, so just gone for this instead. Been checking on the refurbs for a good few weeks to see if any popped up.

Find myself a dock now for black friday, and I'll be sorted (edited)
  24. GEEK88's avatar
I give it until Black Friday and new will be discounted
    Patandacat's avatar
    How discounted tho?
  25. FreshPrince's avatar
Mentioned earlier might be wishful thinking but these might drop further in the Autumn Sale. As this is the going price currently and the New Steam Deck has had a few sales on the RRP price since its release.

Love mine, started to get into PC gaming backend of last year, but got a bit fed up sitting in my office playing on stuff in the cold winter. Now I've got a Deck hooked up on the TV in the lounge and enjoy spending free time playing it. Currently addicted to Cyberpunk 2077. (edited)

hoping that they know 64gb will fly, so put up the others first and 64gb later
  32. Carl_Jenkins23's avatar
I bought a refurb last time they were on sale. Have loved it.. It was like brand new when I recieved it, not a mark on it. Swapped the 64gb out for a 1tb for £60.00 from aliexpress..
