The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) lives a simple life with his fellow hobbits in the shire, until the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) arrives and convinces him to join a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor. The journey takes Bilbo on a path through treacherous lands swarming with orcs, goblins and other dangers, not the least of which is an encounter with Gollum (Andy Serkis) and a simple gold ring that is tied to the fate of Middle Earth in ways Bilbo cannot even fathom

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Having survived the first part of their unsettling journey, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his companions (Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage) continue east. More dangers await them, including the skin-changer Beorn and the giant spiders of Milkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood Elves, Bilbo and the dwarves journey to Lake-town and, finally, to the Lonely Mountain, where they face the greatest danger of all: the fearsome dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies:

Having reclaimed Erebor and vast treasure from the dragon Smaug, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) sacrifices friendship and honor in seeking the Arkenstone, despite Smaug's fiery wrath and desperate attempts by the Hobbit Bilbo (Martin Freeman) to make him see reason. Meanwhile, Sauron sends legions of Orcs in a sneak attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As the fate of Middle Earth hangs in the balance, the races of Men, Elves and Dwarves must decide whether to unite and prevail -- or all die.

Is this 4k as just looked on store and saying 720p hd, says can only watch 4k on apple tv 4k does that mean the Apple tv app (edited)

If you’re seeing that on a pc/laptop then you’re only seeing 720p because that’s what you have your download settings set to.
Downloads however are limited to 1080p, you can only stream in 4K via a compatible device using the Apple TV app or an atv4K.

I'm just finishing the hobbit book and will be reading lord of the rings afterwards. Am I safe to watch these hobbit films or do they spoil anything?

Safe to watch - probably take longer to watch these films than read the book!

Only looks like that's in HD not 4k

Id rather it be shorter edited to match the book. Not extended even more!

Still haven't watched the third film of these and this is coming from a massive LOTR fan!

I love the LOTR movies and have watched the extended versions multiple times ... but the Hobbit, even the theatrical release, felt so dragged out that I've not watched them again, even when on free to air TV.

Such terrible films, a shame as it could have been great as a single film. Martin freeman was the perfect choice for bilbo.

Daft question as I've never bought films through Apple tv before- do these ever disappear or are they truly available forever? I probably won't watch these for some time if I buy them as I don't have a 4k tv currently.

I'm maybe in the minority, but I always felt that the book crammed a lot of events in and was too brief and rushed on key details compared to LOTR. The films I felt were true to the spirit of the book and didn't feel as rushed.

Well you own the license to watch them forever all the while they’re made available, as for how long they’ll actually be available for is like asking how longs a piece of string.
14 years here and haven’t lost a single movie or tv show I’ve bought.
Previous to that using the same timeframe I’ve purchased the exact same movies on Blu-ray that I did on both DVD and VHS before that (I’ve also got some DVDs and even a couple of Blu-rays that no longer load up anymore) so if you look at it that way some of those earlier digital purchases have outlasted those previous formats put together, and quite a lot of those earlier digital purchases have had a 4K upgrade for no additional cost either.
